Betty Britton Burgess, 81, widow of Charles S. Burgess, died Thursday, March 29, 2018, surrounded by her family in Kingstree Nursing Facility after a long illness.
Betty was born February 16, 1937, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Joseph S. and Alice Bryan Britton. She was a graduate of Kingstree High School and was the long time secretary for Williamsburg Oil Company and then Drucker Drugs. Betty was a lifelong member of Union Presbyterian Church in Salters, SC, where she taught Nursery for 28 years and was an active member in Women of the Church. Lovingly known as “Miss B” by family and friends, Betty was the coordinator for the “Reunion of the Decade” for Kingstree High School held in Kingstree and Florence, SC in 1995. Jim Owens, Kingstree native, Nashville music producer and a dear friend of Betty’s was the mastermind behind the Reunion, but Betty worked tirelessly to see that it was a success. Jim honored her at the reunion for her hard work. Betty was a wonderful mother and loved her children and grandchildren.
Surviving Mrs. Burgess are: her daughter, Fran B. Clowney, of Kingstree; her two sons, Scott (Sandra) Burgess and Gene (Melony) Burgess, both of Greeleyville; four grandchildren, William Edward Clowney, Logan B. (Chris) Kirkus, Michael Gene Burgess, and Blake Sylvanus Burgess; two great grandchildren, Jordan Marie Clowney and Hayden Charles Kirkus; a sister, Edna B. David, of Salters; and many special nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and her husband, Betty was preceded in death by her brother, J.D. Britton, a sister, Joan B. Street, and her son-in-law Eddie Clowney.

So sorry to learn of Mrs. Betty’s death. What a wonderful woman and friend to our family…and to all that knew her. She is whole again and with Jesus! Hallelujah!!! Love to you all.
Miss Betty was a lovely woman who cherished her family, those family dinners, Christmas, and actually everyday of the week! While I know the family feels a void, she can finally rest and be healed. God bless her, she will be missed. Our deepest sympathies to all the family.

I am heartbroken over the loss of my dear friend and partner Miss Betty. I cannot put into words how much her
friendship has meant to Lorianne and I, and how important she was to me during our “Reunion of the Decade”
event. There is no way it could have been accomplished without her by my side. Sleep tight my lovely friend and
I so look forward to seeing you in our next life.
We’re thinking of you and praying that you are all granted a measure of peace. May the God of all comfort continue to give you the strength to endure with hope in his promise to wipe all tears from pain away and death.
