Mr. James Franklin Thompkins, 59, husband of Dianna Quattlebaum Thompkins, passed away Sunday, July 26, 2020, at Williamsburg Regional Hospital in Kingstree SC.
Mr. Thompkins was born March 7, 1961, in Loris, SC, a son of the late Paul Thompkins and Sarah Britt. He was a graduate of Garrett High School in Charleston, SC. James was in the grocery business ever since he was a child. He worked as a teenager with his father at Paul’s Meat and Grocery on Nassau Street in Charleston, SC. James was a former member of the St. Stephen Lion’s Club, market manager of St. Stephen IGA for 23 years, and was the current manager and owner operator of Kingstree IGA since 2006 in Kingstree, SC. He had many accomplishments. He was Chamber of Commerce Retailer of The Year in 2012 and Deacon at the Kingstree First Baptist Church, in Kingstree, SC. He was also the Grand Marshall in the St. Stephen and Kingstree Parade. James was well known for his hard work ethics and contagious love for others. What he enjoyed the most was spending time with family at the lake. Not only was he a hard worker, he was a wonderful, loving, providing husband, father, and Pepaw. He will be greatly missed by many who knew him.
Surviving James, in addition to his wife of 39 years, Dianna, are: A daughter Melissa Thompkins (Jason) Gentry, of Moncks Corner SC; two grandchildren, Carolyna Gentry and Corbyn Gentry; three sisters, Diane (Wayne) Norman, of Eutawville, SC; Janet (John) Wyndham, of Hollywood, SC; and Paula (Paul) Yancy, of Alabama; and several nieces and nephews.
The family expresses their appreciation for all the calls and prayers during James’s illness, we love you all.
Graveside funeral Services will be 5 PM, Thursday, July 30, 2020 at Kingstree Memorial Gardens, in Kingstree SC. The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 29, 2020, from 5pm to 7pm at Williamsburg Funeral Home in Kingstree SC. Masks should be worn and social distancing rules will be used at both gatherings. I had the pleasure of working with James and Dianna at the IGA in Greeleyville. Both were always great to work with. James always had a smile on his face and a kind greeting. My thoughts and prayers are with the family and his work family.

My brothers and I worked with James and Dianna at the IGA in Bonneau back in the mid 80’s, they were both so very nice and always looked out for us. My daughter Carla and her husband William are fairly new members of the Kingstree First Baptist Church, I was not surprised to hear that James was the very first person to greet them on their first Sunday there. He was always friendly and very hard working. Praying for God’s Peace and Comfort for his family and church family during this time of great loss.

So many prayers being said for all the family, friends and employees. I do hope everyone can feel them. I do not believe I ever entered IGA that James didn’t have a smile on his face. He did so many wonderful things for so many. I know he is smiling brighter than ever now, walking with our Savior. ❤️

IGA will never be the same, there has been a deep void and emptiness at work now, Mr. James was a tough boss and for good reason, but he has touched each employee in his own way, we all are heartbroken, and lost, but mostly praying for Mrs. Diana and the family, Mr. James will be greatly missed and forever loved.
This news was heartbreaking! James was always such a nice man and so kind. I will say that James had no bigger fan than my Dad. He loved James and enjoyed any time he got to see him! Back in June they ate breakfast together and went to the lake house and sat on the porch and talked for hours. So glad they had that time together! Dianna and Melissa we are thinking about you and praying for strength during this difficult time. Anyone who knew James knew he adored you both! ❤️
James always had a contagious smile, and was always so friendly. Dianne, I just can’t imagine your emptiness and sorrow. You had a good man. God will help you all get through this and heal. Melissa, he was so proud of you! We would stop and chat in the store. He always would talk about you, he said she still has that most improved trophy you gave her in elementary school! Grinning from ear to ear talking about you and those grandchildren. May God give you all the strength to heal, and carry on!

So sorry for your loss. James was much younger than me but we grew up together on Poplin Ave in Charleston. I had not seen James for many years until a few years ago I came home from Alabama to preach my aunt’s funeral. James was there. My aunt had worked for him in St Stephens. Joyce Campbell. It was great to see him and catch up. I will be praying for you all as only God can heal a grieving heart. Praise God James was a Christian and we know we shall see him again.

Just found out about his death. We were so shocked. Such a good deacon in the Baptist Church and such a helpful man. both in and out of the grocery store. If I needed something, he didn’t stock, he would order it for me. Throughout the many deaths in our family over the last several years, he contributed food, and most importantly caring and prayers. Hey Dianna. I’m sure you don’t remember us, but we just heard about the passing of James. We are the couple that had granddaughter who needed a liver transplant, which she finally got.Our hearts go out to you and your daughter! He had an infectious smile and will be missed by so many. We have been out of the loop since Dale retired 2 years ago.

I will always miss him I know how bad this illness is because I was in hospital 3 months with it at the same time James was former employee mrs Dianna the lord saved. My Life will always keep you in my prayers
