Mrs. Mae Delle McKnight McClary, 84, widow of William J. “Bill” McClary, Sr., passed away Monday, September 25, 2017, at her daughter’s home after a long illness.

Mrs. McClary was born October 25, 1932, in Kingstree, a daughter of the late Joe Tisdale and Ola Mae “Palmas” Tisdale. She was a graduate of Kingstree High School and was a dedicated housewife, mother and grandmother. “Miss Mae Delle” was a devoted member of Millwood United Methodist Church and was very active until her health declined.

Surviving  Mrs. McClary are: her daughter, Wanda M. Holliday; her son, William J. (Mary) McClary, Jr.; son-in-law, Ronnie Brown; 6 grandchildren, Ashley S. Henderson, Hunter (Angie) Holliday, Caroline H. (Brandon) Stepp, Justin (Heather Ray) McClary, Heather Jean McClary, and Caroline Cameron Birchler; 7 great grandchildren, Whitney S. (Ben) Collins, Jacob Snowden, Mac Holliday, Harley Grace McClary, Keaton Windham, Riley Baylor, and Shaylee Barrineau. In addition to her husband Bill, Mrs. McClary was preceded in death by two daughters, Debbie McClary and Mary McClary Brown, a son-in-law, Bill Holliday and three brothers.

Mr. William Montague “Montie” Nexsen, 62, husband of Diane Wiggins Nexsen, passed away Thursday evening, September 21, 2017, at his home after a long illness.

Mr. Nexsen was born August 6, 1955, in Kingstree, a son of Mrs. Mary Wood “Woody” Douglass Nexsen and the late Louis Jacobs “Crane” Nexsen. Montie was a graduate of Kingstree Senior High School and MUSC with a BS degree in Allied Health and was the Laboratory Director at Williamsburg Regional Hospital. He was the owner of Sound Solutions and he installed sound systems in homes, churches, and businesses throughout the area along with providing the sound for The Kingstree Trials and Williamsburg Hometown Chamber Banquets each year. Montie was the “Voice of the Stallions” for many years, calling Williamsburg Academy football games at The Corral every fall and also managed Uncle Monty’s Tree farm for over 20 years. He loved music and played guitar in several Classic Rock and Country bands over the years. Montie was a member of Kingstree Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and a choir member.

Surviving Mr. Nexsen, in addition to his mother “Woody” Nexsen, of Kingstree and his wife of 42 years, Diane Nexsen are: his daughter, Christina Nexsen (Bradley) Dyar, of N. Charleston; his son, Logan Nexsen, of N. Charleston; his grandson,  William Logan LaRocca, who Montie lovingly called “WillRock” and “WillRock” returned the love by always calling his grandfather, “Big Dude”; his sister, Barbara N. Lansche, of Charlotte; and 2 brothers, Doug (Linda) Nexsen, of Huntersville, NC and Louis (Becky) Nexsen, of Pinopolis.

A memorial service will be held 2 PM Sunday, September 24, 2017, in Kingstree Presbyterian Church. Montie’s family will receive friends in the church Fellowship Hall following the service and also at their home from 4 to 6 PM Saturday afternoon. Idella “Ikey” Hanna Brown, 84, widow of Harris F. Brown, Sr., passed away Friday, August 25, 2017, at her residence.

Ikey was born January 2, 1933, in Kingstree, SC, a daughter of the late William James Hanna and Ruby Stone Hanna. She was a graduate of Kingstree High School. Ikey was the housekeeping supervisor at Williamsburg Regional Hospital and the former owner of The Unicorn-Framing and Gift Shop. She was an avid quilter.

Surviving Ikey are: two daughters, Lissa (Wade) McFaddin, of Tennessee; Stephanie (David) Evans, of Kingstree; two sons, Jeffrey Brown and Russell (Lori) Brown, both of Florida; brother, Buddy (Brenda) Hanna, of Dalzell; sisters, Jimmie Grace Hanna, of St. Simons Island, Georgia and Marilea Dooley, of Vancover, WA; grandchildren; Michael McFaddin, Jeremy McFaddin, Sara McFaddin, Sara Ashley (Ryan) Richardson, Hunter (Alex) Evans and Hanna (Hugh) McCutchen; and great grandchild, Jonah Johnson.

In addition to her parents, Ikey was preceded in death by her husband, Harris; two sons, Fritz Brown and James Brown; a brother, Billy Hanna; and a grandson, Christopher Brown.

Carol McCutchen Gandy, 65, widow of Charles Edward Gandy, passed away Wednesday, August 16, 2017, from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Carol was born June 9, 1952, in Kingstree, SC, a daughter of the late Willard McCutchen and Mildred McClary McCutchen. She was a graduate of Kingstree High School and Florence Darlington Technical College. Carol was a registered nurse and worked at Santee-Wateree Community Mental Health. She was a member of Sandy Bay Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Surviving Carol are: her son, Kelly (Lee Anne) Gandy, of Columbia; her daughter, Kim (Mark) Vice, of Lexington; her sisters, Justine Matthews, of Kingstree; Clarice (Blakeley) Mercer, of Moncks Corner; Cynthia (Bobby) Robinson, Charlene McKenzie and Darlene (Joe) Miles, all of Kingstree; grandchildren, Dilyn Vice, Caroline (Trent) Allen and Hunter Vice; three great grandchildren, Easton Vice, Kimberly Grace Allen and Breelyn Jade Vice; grand dog Tyson Gandy.

Mr. Jerry Ludwig Ganes, 62, husband of Frances Bell Ganes, passed away Wednesday, August 16, 2017, in McLeod Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Ganes was born February 2, 1955, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Jessie James Ganes and Annie Powell Ganes. He was a graduate of Williamsburg County schools and the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy. He was a former Law Enforcement Officer and Corrections Officer and was a Security Guard. Jerry was a former Golden Gloves Boxer and coached and umpired high school and Little League baseball.

Surviving Mr. Ganes, in addition to his wife of 43 years, Frances Ganes, are: daughter, Elloree Ganes (Joe Amman), of Charleston; 2 sons, Jeremy (Tracy) Ganes, of Turbeville, and Gavin (Lisa) Ganes, of Cades; grandchildren, Gabby Ganes, Jake Amman, J.C. Ganes, and Emma Amman; brothers, Willard (Adee) Ganes, of Columbia, Rev. Gusta (Libby) Ganes, of Kingstree, and Jody (Pam) Ganes, of Cades; brother-in-law, Paul Patrick; sister-in-law, Helen Ganes; special family member Jodie Eason Williams; and several nieces and nephews. Ms. Carol “Peggy” Hancock Rosser, 70, passed away Saturday, July 29, 2017 in Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.

Ms. Rosser was born January 26, 1947, in Olanta, a daughter of Dorothy “Dot” Evans and the late Junius “Buster” Carol Hancock.  She graduated from Kingstree High School and studied Cosmetology at Williamsburg Technical College. Ms. Peggy enjoyed being with her family and friends. She attended Kingstree Pentecostal Holiness Church.

In addition to her mother Dot, of Oak Ridge, TN, Ms. Peggy was survived by a son, Meca Ward (Wendy), of Conway; two daughters, Carol Martin (Keith), of Kingstree and Rachel McGee (Josh Lee), of Florence; 11 grandchildren, Britney Ward, Whitney Ward, Meca Ward, Coty Martin, Kassidy Martin, Caleb Martin, Abby McGee, John David McGee, Chloe McGee, and Jack McGee; 2 great-grandchildren, Hunter Stalvey and Heath Stalvey; a sister, Vicki Hancock, of Powell, TN. Ms. Peggy was preceded in death by her father “Buster” Hancock, step-father Virgil Haynes, and grandson Jacob Tyler Catoe.

Ms. Gracie Allen Scott, 78, passed away Wednesday, July 26, 2017, in Sumter, SC.

Ms. Scott was born August 30, 1938, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late George Walter Scott and Fannie McKnight Scott. She graduated from Greeleyville High School and was a long-time bookkeeper at Exchange Bank of Kingstree. She was a member of the former Lane Presbyterian Church.

Survivors are her daughter, Ellen C. (Tommy) Stuckey, of Nesmith, SC and her sister, Virginia Tedder, of Kingstree.

Mr. Werner Mauz, 59, passed away Saturday, July 15, 2017, in McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence, SC.

Mr. Mauz was born January 12, 1958, in Hochdorf, Germany, a son of Rose Bartl Mauz Kazmierczak and the late Horst Mauz. He came to the United States when he was 6 years old and spoke no English at the time. Werner had wonderful stories of his transition to America and loved sharing them. He was a devoted fan of NASCAR and especially Dale Earnhardt. His home reflected that love, displaying shelves full of NASCAR memorabilia. After Dale Earnhardt’s death, Werner pulled for whoever was driving the lead Chevrolet.

Surviving Mr. Mauz, in addition to his mother Rose, of Greenwood,  are: 2 sons, Jason Mauz, of Kingstree and Jeff Mauz, of New Port Richey, FL; a brother, Horst Mauz, of Greenwood; a sister, Lisa Timmerman, of Abbeville; grandsons, Joshua and Brayden Mauz; the mother of his sons, Pam Sweat; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Christopher Lamar “Chris” Ward, 52, husband of Teri Cantey Ward, passed away Tuesday, July 4, 2017, from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Mr. Ward was born December 13, 1964, in Kingstree, a son of the late Lajoe George Ward and Virginia “Ginger” Hinson Ward Joye. He was a graduate of Williamsburg Academy and Central Carolina Technical College in Sumter. Chris was an avid outdoorsman; loved to fish and hunt, but believed strongly in the conservation of these natural resources for future generations. He loved Pawleys Island and was a true “Creek Freak”. Chris enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest. He was an entered apprentice of Kingstree Masonic Lodge # 46AFM and a member of Williamsburg Presbyterian Church.

Reynolds James Smith, 81, passed away Tuesday, July 4, 2017, in an automobile accident near Kingstree.

Mr. Smith was born August 10, 1935, in Cades, SC, a son of the late Herbert Bejamin Smith and Eulee Kirby Smith. He was educated in Williamsburg County schools, was a veteran of the US Air Force, and retired after 32 years at Milliken in Kingstree. He was a member of Salters Assembly of God Church.

Surviving Mr. Smith are: a daughter, Donna Powell, of Lake City; 4 sons, Roderick James “Ricky” Smith of Ridgeville, Marvin Eugene (Denise) Smith of Kingstree, Eric Jerome (Tonya) Smith of Turbeville, Greg (Brittany) Smith of New Zion; his former wife of 33 years and mother of his children, Sue Smith; 2 brothers, H.B. (Nora) Smith of Kingstree, Arial (Cheryl) Smith of Indiana, 6 sisters, Catherine Duke, of Timmonsville, Nita Mae (Burnette) Yarborough of New Zion, Dell Prosser,  Linda Williamson, and Janie Knight, of Kingstree; and Brooks Jackson of Indiana; 11 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by a brother, Danny Smith and a sister, Rounette Belue.

Ellen Virginia Williams Miller, 90, widow of William Miller, passed away Monday, June 19, 2017, at her residence in Kingstree.

Mrs. Miller was born February 25, 1927, in Slab Fork, West Virginia, a daughter of the late James E. Williams and Pearl Hamilton Williams.

Surviving Mrs. Ellen are children; Vicki (Steve) Hudson, Patty (Billy) Allen, Ora (Randy) McGuire, Ivory (Pete) Simmons, and Cyrus (Verna) Webb Jr.; grandchildren, Chuck (Tracy) Webb, Dwayne (Jamie) Webb, Angel ( Randal) Lee, Charles, Dreama, Shirley, Shawn, Robert, Londa, Billy, Lisa, Brady, HaLonda, and Larry; and 21 great grandchildren.

Mrs. Mary Nell Todd Thompson, 94, widow of Ralph LaRoy Thompson, died Thursday, June 1, 2017, in Williamsburg Regional Hospital in Kingstree, SC, after a short illness.

Mrs. Thompson was born November 26, 1922, in the Dogwood Neck Community of Horry County, SC, a daughter of the late Benjamin Haskell Todd and Julia Armenta Parker Todd.  Mary Nell (or “Mernell” as she was often called by family) was a graduate of Wampee High School.  She received an Associate Degree from what is now called Spartanburg Methodist College (called Textile Industrial Institute when she entered) in 1942, and a B.A. in Early Childhood Education in 1972 from the University of South Carolina.

Mrs. Thompson taught in the mid-1940’s at Red Bluff Elementary in Horry County before she married.  She taught both first and second grade in school year 1942-43 and both third grade and fourth grade in the school years from 1944-1946.  Later with the Williamsburg County School System, Mary Nell taught her much beloved kindergarten classes from 1968 until 1986 (Lane Elementary, St. Mark Elementary and Anderson Elementary).  Mrs. Thompson received the Lane School Parent Educator Award for The Puzzle of Parenting Program from 1977-1981.  She was also a Williamsburg County Education Association Honored Teacher of the Year in 1982.

An expert seamstress, Mrs. Thompson also worked several years for Warsaw Manufacturing Company.  A member of the Kingstree First Baptist Church since November 12, 1944, she was active in multiple church activities, her favorite being a member of and a teacher of the Joyful Rainbow Class for decades. She counted each woman of that class her friend.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her son, Ralph LaRoy Thompson, Jr., of Kingstree. Mrs. Thompson, a “middle child,” was also preceded in death by all of her seven siblings:  Oneida Todd Martin, Laurene Todd Dusenbury, Benjamin Clayton Todd, Breckenridge Haskell Todd, Ella Pearl Todd Willard, William Judson Todd, and Marjorie Todd Holt.

Survivors are:  her two daughters, Eileen T. (Binky) Maness of Kingstree and Julia T. James (Rick Frank,fiance) of Ladson; 9 grandchildren, Laurel Lifrage Wade of Union, Tamara Jane Lifrage of Spartanburg, Andrew Maness of Summerville, Jennifer Ferguson Elkins (Brian) of Simpsonville, Marjorie Ferguson Crowder (Paul) of Mt. Pleasant, Todd Kendley James of Ladson, Benjamin Edward Thompson of Columbia, Michael Scott Thompson of Columbia, and Paul Anthony Thompson (Julie Shahon—fiance) of Kingstree; 11 great-grandchildren, Jeremy Seth Wade (Lacey) of Kentucky, Logan Adair Wade and Nicholas Blake Wade of Union, Lyla Addison Lifrage of Kingstree, Ryley Elkins of Simpsonville, Harrison Crowder and Luke Crowder of Mt. Pleasant, Chloe Thompson of Mullins, Dezmund CorbinThompson and Dylan Xavier Hartgrove of Lexington, and Isaac Patton James of Florence.  Mary Nell Thompson was also the great-great-grandmother of Mason Wade of Kentucky.

Othel Tisdale “Tizzie” Smoak, 94, widow of Floyd Smoak, passed away Thursday, June 1, 2017, at her residence in Kingstree.

Mrs. Smoak was born January 7, 1923, in Kingstree, SC, a daughter of the late John James “Dan” Tisdale and Agnes Janie “Janie” Strong Tisdale. She worked for many years at J.S. Weeks Produce in Charleston. She was an Episcopalian.

Martha Ann McKenzie Gibbons, 73, passed away Wednesday, May 31, 2017, in Carolinas Hospital System in Florence, SC.

Ms. Gibbons was born October 24, 1943, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Willie Mack McKenzie and Vera Strickland McKenzie. She was a graduate of Kingstree High School and had worked at Baxter Labs and Crescent Tool. She was a member of Sandy Bay Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Surviving Ms. Gibbons are 2 sons, Bart Clyde (Ruth) Richardson, of Scranton and Robert Carl (Stephanie) Richardson, of Kingstree, and 7 grandchildren.

Howard Weaver Williams, Jr., 63, passed away Friday, May 26, 2017, in McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.

Mr. Williams was born August 13, 1953, in Kingstree, SC, a son of the late Howard Weaver Williams, Sr. and Margaret Lenoir Williams. Howard was a graduate of Kingstree Senior High School and attended Francis Marion University. He worked for several companies in the rubber/plastics industry over the years starting with Colonial Rubber when it was located in Kingstree. Howard was a member of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Kingstree.

Surviving Mr. Williams are: his daughter, Kelly Williams; his son, Howard Andrew (Francis) Williams; his step-son, Kevan (Crystal) Freeman; grandchildren, Taylor Evans, Maggie Evans, Mitchell Freeman, Chase Graham, Noel Freeman, and Charlie Williams; brother, Frank (Kathy) Williams; sister, Nancy Williams; several nieces and nephews; and friend and companion, Lisa Williams. Brenda Morris Fulton, 65, widow of Leonard Fulton, died Monday, May 15, 2017, in an auto accident near Kingstree.

Mrs. Fulton was born August 20, 1951, in Kingstree, a daughter of Annie Coker Morris and the late Arthur C. Morris. She was a graduate of Kingstree High School and was an employee at Williamsburg County Disabilities and Special Needs. Brenda was an active member of Kingstree First Assembly of God Church, where she was the choir leader.

Surviving Mrs. Fulton, in addition to her mother Annie of New Zion, are: three sons, Michael Langley of Cades, Stephen (Amanda) Langley of Rose Hill, and Matthew (Tracy) Langley of Prospect; step daughter, Tammy Hipp of Manning; 1 brother, A.C. “Cleve” (Nancy) Morris, Jr. of Hebron; 3 sisters, Delores (Gordon) McElveen and Paula Coker, both of New Zion, and Naomi (Leo) Carmichael of Muddy Creek; and 3 granddaughters, Katherine Rebecca Langley, Lacey Grace Langley, and Jaymi Hipp.

Jeanette McIntosh Morris, 90, widow of James Alton Morris, Sr., passed away Monday, May 15, 2017, at her home in the Bloomingvale community after a long illness.

Mrs. Morris was born June 13, 1926, in Foreston, a daughter of the late David Edgar McIntosh and William Archie Hodge McIntosh Moore. “Miss Jeanette” and her husband James farmed and owned and operated a store in Bloomingvale for many years while raising their family. “Miss Jeanette” enjoyed traveling, especially in “The Great Smokies” and enjoyed horseback riding with her family. She loved gardening and was so adept at it that she grew roses in test plots for Park Seed Company. Mrs. Morris was a dedicated member of Elim United Methodist Church and remained active until recently. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother Ervin McIntosh.

Surviving Mrs. Morris are: her son, James Alton (Yevonne) Morris, Jr., of Andrews; two daughters, Sandra M. (Michael) Epps and Jennifer M. (Tommy) Conway, both of Kingstree; grandchildren, “Woody” (Hanna) Michau of Manning, “Jimmy” (Katherine) Morris, III of Georgetown, LeeRoy “Lee” (Carey) Morris of Andrews, “Micah” D. Epps  of Kingstree, William T. Burroughs of Kingstree, Jessica (Kenneth) Johnston of Huntsville, AL, Rebecca (Shawn) Hayworth of Lexington, and Thomas J. “Joey” (Melissa) Conway II of Chapin: 10 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 3 PM Thursday, May 18, 2017, in Elim United Methodist Church, with burial in Andrews Memorial Cemetery. Catherine Tisdale Shaffer, 87, wife and beloved aunt, died at her residence after a short illness.

Mrs. Shaffer was born August 15, 1929, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of James Desmore and Gerdett Nesmith Tisdale. She was a 1948 graduate of Kingstree High School, a graduate of Keys Business College, Norfolk Virginia and a retired Administrative Assistant of the General Motors Acceptance Corporation, Alexandria, Virginia.

After living and working in Virginia for 30 years, Catherine retired in 1978, and returned home to Kingstree.  She spent the next 39 years devoting her time and energy to her church, home and family. She was a member of Williamsburg Baptist Church.

Mrs. Shaffer is survived by her husband, Charles L. “Verne” Shaffer of the home and several nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister Pauline Tisdale Fields, two brothers, S. Leon Tisdale and D.D. Tisdale.

Funeral services will be held 11:30 AM, Tuesday, May 9, 2017, in Williamsburg Baptist Church, 8378 Hemingway Hwy, Kingstree, SC.  Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00 AM in the church.  Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Laurie Gary Johnson, 85, husband of Annie Barfield Johnson, passed away peacefully Saturday, May 6, 2017, at his home after a long illness.

Mr. Laurie was born in Columbia, SC on September 23, 1931, a son of the late James N. Johnson and Elendor Bradshaw Johnson. He graduated from Columbia High School in 1951, and worked at Georgia Pacific and Koppers Company. He was a farmer and a member of Union Presbyterian Church. In addition to his parents, Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by a brother Lynwood Johnson and a sister Georgie George.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 64 years, Annie Johnson, of Salters, are: five sons, Gary (Tecey) Johnson, of Columbia, Wayne (Debbie) Johnson, of Manning, and Jimmy “J.J.” (Susan) Johnson, Ronnie (Gayle) Johnson, and Dennis (Pam) Johnson, all of Salters; a brother, Jason Johnson, of Columbia; 16 grandchildren; and 19 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2 PM Tuesday, May 9, 2017, in Union Presbyterian Church, with burial in the church cemetery. Mr. Johnson’s family will greet friends from 6 to 8 PM Monday in Williamsburg Funeral Home in Kingstree. Jean Woolbright Brown, 90, widow of Joseph M. Brown, Jr., passed away peacefully at home on April 29, 2017.  A native of Seneca, S.C., Achsah Jean Woolbright moved to Marietta, GA then Washington, D.C. where she met her husband, Joseph M. Brown, Jr. They were married for 35 years until his death in 1990.

Her indomitable spirit allowed her to be totally independent as a widow for the last 27 years of her life, surrounded by wonderful neighbors and friends, initially in Bethesda, MD and for the last 7 years at Vinson Hall in McLean, VA.

In addition to her husband she was predeceased by her parents, William Edward Woolbright and Achsah Laura Cromer Woolbright; her son, Joseph M. Brown, III, her brothers, Edward Woolbright, Jr. and Harry Woolbright and her sisters, Laura Woolbright Manning and Lucia Woolbright Wilton.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Frederick Zeisberg, her nephew Emmel M. Woolbright and niece, Derrelle Woolbright Lack.

A private graveside service will be held at a future date at Union Presbyterian Church in Salters, S.C.
