Sybil McAlister McClary, 83, widow of Jack McClary, passed away Monday, July 18, 2016, in McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.

Mrs. McClary was born September 21, 1932, in Hemingway, SC, a daughter of the late Charles Betts McAlister, Sr. and Ludie Ward McAlister. She was a graduate of Hemingway High School, where she was an award winning basketball player and she continued her love of sports after her marriage to Jack as a member of the Ladies Softball League in Millwood. “Miss Sybil” was a Belk Department Store employee and manager for 32 years and kept a warm, loving home for her family and her extended family. She was a much loved mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, sister-in-law and aunt.

Surviving Mrs. McClary are: her sons, Russell (Karen) McClary, of Kingstree and Glenn McClary, of Surfside Beach; 7 grandchildren, Danielle McClary Cox, Lee R. McClary, Danielle Foxworth, Devan McClary, Dylan McClary, Marshall McClary, and Mary Paige McClary; 6 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. McClary was preceded in death by brothers, Joe, Billy, Ray, Charles, and Therrell McAlister; sisters, Blanche M. Reddish, Travis McAlister, and Mavis M. Brown; a son, Danny McAlister McClary; and a grandson John Ross McClary.

Rosalie Camlin Evans, 93, of Salters, SC, was born November 30, 1922, in Vesper, WI. She made her journey to be with her Lord in Heaven on July 4, 2016. Waiting for her there was her beloved husband William B. Evans, her son, William R. Evans, and a daughter, Sandra Evans Moyd. Also waiting were two sons-in-law, who were like sons to her, Russell Moyd and Bertis Reed Parker, Jr.

Mrs. Evans worked for many years in C. Boyd and Son store in Lane, SC and was known for her kindness and sweet and gentle ways. She was much loved by both the children and adults of the community, for she always had a cookie for the children and a kind word for the adults. She was a long time member of Union Presbyterian Church where she was a former Sunday School teacher.

She is survived by a daughter, Kathryn “Kaye” Evans Parker, of Beaufort, SC and a sister Hazel (Pat) Folks, of Tampa, FL, five grandchildren and spouses, 7 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandson. She is also survived by Joyce and Jerry McDaniel, of Salters, who were two of the greatest treasures of her life. She loved them like they were her children.

Making her final days more comfortable besides her daughter Kathryn, Joyce and Jerry McDaniel, were her grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Shane and Donna Moyd and the staff at McLeod Hospice House in Florence.

James Geoffrey “Geoff” Lifrage, 70, widower of Phyllis Thompson Lifrage, passed away Thursday, June 16, 2016, in the Williamsburg Regional Hospital Emergency Room.

Mr. Lifrage was born August 21, 1945, in Greenville, SC, a son of the late Jane Richardson Lifrage and Julius Geoffrey “J.G.” Lifrage. Geoff graduated from Carlisle Military Academy in 1963, attended Montreat-Anderson Junior College, and graduated from The Baptist College of Charleston, now Charleston Southern University, in 1970. He was a former employee of Farmers Telephone Co-Op, a former Florence County Tax Assessor, and retired from Williamsburg County as the Tax Assessor. He was a member of Kingstree First Baptist Church and the Kingstree Moose Lodge. Geoff, who was affectionately known as “Puddin’” by his friends, loved the outdoors, and especially loved fishing and hunting.

Mr. Lifrage is survived by: 2 daughters, Laurel Lifrage Wade, of Union and Tamara Jane Lifrage, of Spartanburg; a special daughter since she was five years old, Melannie Thompson (Danny) Mims, of Kingstree; 7 grandchildren, Jeremy Seth (Lacey) Wade, Logan Adair Wade, Nicholas Blake Wade, Lyla Addison Smith Lifrage, Danny Richard Mims, Jr, Thomas Nicholas Mims, and Noah Aaron Mims; 1 great grandchild, Benjamin Mason Wade; his sister Frankie L. (Larease) Mims, of Eastover; 3 aunts, Wilhelmina Grist, of Summerville, Libby Wilburn, of Clinton, and Roberta Shepherd, of Charleston; a niece, Holly M. (Perry) Jameson and a nephew, Blake (Margaret) Mims; and the mother of his daughters, Eileen T. (Binky) Maness, of Kingstree.

Edward Molokie, 93, husband of Alice Syvertsen Molokie, died Sunday, June 12, 2016, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.

Mr. Molokie was born October 21, 1922, in New Jersey, a son of the late Theodore Molokie and Mary Molokie. He received a BS in microbiology from Columbia University in New York. Edward served in the US Army and received a bronze star. He was a retired microbiologist from Gist – Brocades Pharmaceutical Company in Kingstree and was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church.

Mr. Edward is survived by his wife of 67 years, Alice Syvertsen Molokie; his children, Kathy Molokie and Dr. Robert Molokie; his grandchildren, Erika Kennedy and Lauren Polsino; and his great grandson, Brandon Kennedy.

In addition to his parents, Edward was preceded in death by his brothers, Theodore, Walter, Leon and Stephen; and his sisters, Sophie, Viola and Helen.

Fred Liston Tisdale, 80, husband of Willie Mae Cales Tisdale, died Sunday, June 12, 2016, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.

Mr. Tisdale was born November 7, 1935, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Nathan Tisdale and Eloise Morris Tisdale. He attended Indiantown Schools, was in the US Army and was a retired lineman from Utilities Construction. Fred attended Kingstree Church of God and loved to Bar-B-Que.

Mr. Fred is survived by his wife, Willie Mae Cales Tisdale, of Kingstree; his sons, Greg Liston Tisdale, of Kingstree; Eric Nathan (Cynthia) Tisdale, of Lugoff; Jeffrey Brian (Pam) Tisdale of Paxville; his daughter, Wanda Michelle Tisdale, of Kingstree; 6 grand children; 1 great granddaughter; his sister, Bertha Mae (Larry) Welch, of Manning and his brother Jack (Jeanette) Phipps, of Kingstree.

In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by his son, Michael Travis Tisdale; two sisters, Allene Garner and Delma Dukes and a grandson, Travis Liston Tisdale.

William Meadors “Billy” Gordon, 89, husband of Betsy Drennan Gordon, passed away Wednesday, June 8, 2016, in McLeod Hospice House in Florence.

Mr. Gordon was born June 8, 1927, in Kingstree, SC, a son of the late Ruth Meadors Gordon and Alexander McKnight Gordon. He was a graduate of Kingstree High School and Davidson College, and was a World War II US Navy veteran. Billy was a professional photographer and the owner of Gordon Studios in the 50s and 60s. He was an active member of Kingstree United Methodist Church, where he served in many capacities. He was a former board member of Williamsburg Land Company, a former Trustee of Epworth Childrens Home, Columbia College, and The Methodist Manor of the Pee Dee. Mr. Gordon was a former commissioner of The Williamsburg County Soil and Water Conservation Committee and for many years, was a member of the board of Williamsburg First National Bank. Mr. Gordon, a dedicated conservationist and agriculturist, farmed his family’s land for more than 50 years.

Mr. Gordon is survived by: his wife of 53 years, Elizabeth “Betsy” Drennan Gordon, of Kingstree; 2 sons, William Drennan (Kathy) Gordon, of Kingstree and John Alexander “Alex” (April) Gordon, of Myrtle Beach; a daughter, Elizabeth (Jay) Pope, of Hemingway; 8 grandchildren, Gordon Pope, Jake Pope, Emma Ryan Gordon, Sarah McClary, Nina Gordon, Liam Gordon, Austin Gordon, and Addison Gordon; a sister, Ruth G. (Richard) Steffen, of Kingsport, TN; brother-in-law, Richard (Sandra) Drennan, of Inman; a niece and nephews; and many special cousins.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Gordon was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Gene G. Carroll.

Christine Davis Andrews, 95, widow of Jack T. Andrews, died Wednesday, June 8, 2016, at McLeod Hospice House in Florence. Mrs. Andrews was born November 14, 1920 in Salters, a daughter of the late James C. Davis and Esther Lifrage Davis. She was a graduate of Kingstree High School. Christine worked in the Navy Yard during WWII and worked at WS McCullough & Son for over 30 years. She enjoyed sewing and gardening and was a member of Union Presbyterian Church and Leila Salters Circle. Mrs. Andrews is survived by: her daughter, Joyce A. (Jerry) McDaniel, of Salters; 2 grandchildren, Dr. Andy (Melissa) McDaniel, of Seneca; and April M. (Casey) Rogers, of Salters; and 6 great grandchildren. Betty Robinson “Tootsie” Davis, 85, widow of John E. Davis, Jr., died Thursday, June 2, 2016, at Tidelands Hospital in Georgetown.

Mrs. Davis was born June 23, 1930, in Kingstree, a daughter of the late Edward G. Robinson and Ada L. Horton Robinson. She was a High School graduate and was a department store clerk. “Tootsie” was a member of Andrews First Pentecostal Holiness Church and a member of the Eastern Star #195.

Mrs. Davis is survived by: her son, John R. (Gwen) Davis; her daughter Rhoda D. (Stephen) Barrineau; grandchildren, Leslie D. (Scott) Piatt; Elizabeth D. (Shawn) Owens; Cal Barrineau and JoBeth Barrineau; three great grandchildren, Blakely Owens; Garrett Piatt; and KateLynn Owens; one sister-in-law, Jeanette D. Browder; and several nieces and nephews.

William Kenneth Covington, 89, died Tuesday, May 31, 2016, in the VA Hospital in Columbia.

Mr. Covington was born June 28, 1926, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late J.R. Covington and Beulah Timmons Covington. He was a High School graduate and served 8 years in the US Navy. Mr. Kenneth was a farmer and also raised cattle.

Mr. Kenneth is survived by: his sister, Vivian Owens Hill, of Hamilton, Montana; his adopted daughter, Gwen Timmons, of Kingstree; his grandsons, Sherod Timmons, of Salters; and Charles “Chucky” Timmons, Jr., of Myrtle Beach; 9 nieces and nephews; and 7 great grandchildren.

  He was preceded in death by his brothers, Johnathan, George and John Lewis Covington; and a sister, Thelma C. McCutchen.

Mary Gayle Grubbs Stoll, 69, slipped away peacefully into the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in the early morning hours of Tuesday, March 15, 2016. Gayle was born in 1946, raised in Kingstree, S.C. and graduated from Kingstree High in 1964.  She attended Coker College and graduated with a BA in early childhood education.  She later attended Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest.  After teaching for many years in the Conway School system, the family moved to Whiteville, NC where she taught at Waccamaw Academy and in the Whiteville City School system. She then returned to school to earn her Master’s Degree from UNC-P in Counseling. Gayle was retired from the Whiteville City School system and afterward continued her calling to help people by serving as a Licensed Professional Counselor through 2015. Throughout her years in Whiteville she was an active member of Whiteville United Methodist Church (WUMC), where she taught Sunday school, served on the worship committee, the WUMC preschool committee and was an Acolyte Coordinator.

Ronald Kenneth Hammond, 77, passed away at his home May 22, 2016, with his family by his side.

Mr. Hammond was born November 27, 1938, in Nichols, SC, a son of the late Hicks and Sadie Rodgers Hammond. He was a graduate of Floyds High School and University of Florida-Lake City with a degree in forestry. He worked with Westvaco and Canal Wood in Kingstree until he established his own business, Kingstree Forest Products, in 1978. Ronald was an active member of Kingstree First Baptist Church, where he served on the building committee for the Family Life Center. He was a member of Kingstree Masonic Lodge # 46 AFM, a Shriner, a former member of the Kingstree Lions Club, and also served on other boards and commissions, including 20 years on the Palmetto Timber Fund Board. His stewardship and long association with the land was recognized when he was awarded the Williamsburg County Agriculturist of the Year in 2015. His hobbies included stock car racing, flying his Piper Arrow airplane, motor cycle touring, golf, and working on his farm, Wayside.

 

Mr. Hammond is survived by: his loving wife of 58 years, Elizabeth Ann Buffkin Hammond; 2 daughters, Valerie Denise Hammond of Wilmington, NC and Ronda Hammond (Mark) Ard of Sumter; 7 grandchildren, Kenneth Scott Lazzari of Carthage, NC, John Phillip Lazzari of Wilminton, NC, Steven Lewis McKenzie and Ronald Harrison McKenzie both of Columbia, James Hammond McKenzie, Ansley Wells Ard and Walker Harvin Ard, all of Sumter; his beloved sister, Carolyn Luna Gray of Moncks Corner; sister-in-law Faye Buffkin (Eddie) Grainger, of Tabor City, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Ronald was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Rodgers Hammond and Lamar Hammond.

Lewis Warren “Lewie” Ward, 67, passed away Friday, May 6, 2016, in McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.

Mr. Ward was born August 5, 1948, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late R. Franklin Ward and Naomi Phillips Ward. He was a graduate of Kingstree High School and Florence Darlington Technical College. Lewie was a U.S. Army veteran and was a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church. He was an avid reader and golfer, and enjoyed renovating old houses and woodworking.

Surviving are: his son, Adam (Alison) Ward, of Lamar; his step-sons, Drew and Cary McClary, of Kingstree;  his brother, Phil (Tommie Ann) Ward, of Florence; his sisters, Mary Winn (Danny) McCrea, of Kingstree; Bea Powell, of Kingstree; and Ruth Anne (Larry) Penn, of Pawleys Island; his grandchildren, C.J. and Elizabeth Stephens of Lamar and Christopher Hance, of Kingstree; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Mary Elizabeth Phillips and Kathy Gordon.

Mrs. Burgess was born March 25, 1947, in Kingstree, a daughter of Hilma Thompson Reardon and the late Harry Audis Reardon. She was a graduate of East Clarendon High School and was a homemaker. Mrs. Burgess was a member of Midway Presbyterian Church.

Surviving, in addition to her husband Bill, of Kingstree and her mother, Hilma T. Mr. McCutchen was born August 2, 1945, in Orangeburg, SC, a son of the late Alton LeRoy McCutchen and Linnie Mae Altman McCutchen. He was a graduate of Kingstree High School and was an insurance salesman. Flynn was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church. He enjoyed golf, fishing, spending time with family, singing or listening to Southern gospel music, watching westerns, and being the best Papa around.

Melvin Melrow “Bo” Bailey, 89, passed away Thursday, April 21, 2016, in Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.

Mr. Bailey was born April 24, 1926, in Cleveland County, NC, a son of the late General Lee Bailey and Olar Godfrey Bailey. He was a World War II veteran of the US Army. “Colonel Bo Bailey”, as he was known in the auction world, was the owner and an auctioneer with Lowcountry Auctions. He also enjoyed gardening and crossword puzzles.

Surviving are: 2 daughters, Donna (Stanley) Scott, of Lake City and Charlene (James) Weaver, of Scranton; 2 sisters, Elnita Jolley, of Shelby, NC and Helen Hullett, of Mooresboro, NC; 2 grandchildren, Kevin (Summer) Landers and Shiloh Norwood; and 3 great grandchildren, Payne Weaver, Asher Norwood, and Trulynn Norwood. Mr. Bailey was preceded in death by his wife Doris, a daughter Renita Wilkes, and a brother Edward Bailey.

Mr. Hanna was born November 13, 1943, in Kingstree, a son of the late Samuel McBride Hanna and Marguerite McClary Hanna. He was a graduate of Kingstree High School, a veteran of the US Army and was the owner of Cardinal Sign Company in St. Stephen, SC since 1964. Phil was an avid golfer and enjoyed reading history books, driving race cars, Clemson football and spending time with his grandchildren.

Surviving in addition to his wife Nancy, of St. Stephen are: his children, Shawn (Jocelyn) Hanna, of Goose Creek; Joye (Woody) Avant, of Georgetown; Joe (Vicky) Brunson, of Bonneau; and Angela (Patrick) Biggs, of Bonneau; 11 grandchildren, Ashton, Kyle, Juliann, Maggie, Matthew, Hanna, Gary, Brandon, Kyle, Parker and Tyler; two great grandchildren, Lillian and Pearce; a brother, Charles (Jo) Hanna, of Kingstree, his dog, Max, and his best friend Moses Shirer.

Mr. Tisdale was born November 26, 1975, in Florence, a son of Jimmy N. Tisdale and Daphne Springs Tisdale. He was a graduate of Lake City High School and enjoyed hunting, fishing and collecting trains.

Mrs. Reardon was born June 2, 1931, in New Zion, a daughter of the late Marion and Minnie Osborne Evans. She retired from Baxter-Travenol and was a long time member of McDowell Presbyterian Church in Greeleyville.
