Ethan Hunter Matthews, 10 year old son of Scotty and Sara Matthews, lost his battle with cancer on Thursday, March 26, 2015 in McLeod’s Hospital in Florence, SC.
Hunter was born November 17, 2004, in Florence, SC and was a third grade student at Anderson Elementary.
Surviving Hunter, in addition to his parents, of Kingstree, are: his four brothers, Gage, Landen, Hayden, and Brantley Matthews; his grandparents, Jay & Brenda Matthews, Timothy Grice, and Peggy Grice; great grandmother, Justine Matthews; and three cousins, Hailey, Carly, and Kayla Ballard. Hunter was preceded in death by his great grandfather Dexter Matthews.

Mrs. Rose Fullwood Mills, 56, passed away Tuesday, March 24, 2015, at her residence in Kingstree.
Mrs. Mills was born November 3, 1958, in Horry County, a daughter of Bill Fullwood and Pauline Martin Fullwood. She graduated from Socastee High School. Mrs. Rose was a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church.
Mrs. Mills is survived by: her parents, Bill and Pauline Fullwood; four brothers; Ebert, Billy (Kim), Lin (Terri), and John (Julia); a sister, Darnell (Rossie); four nephews, Travis, Jake, Sonny, and Robert; six nieces, Julie, Taffeny, Torey, Kate, Mary Quinn, and Amber.

Mr. Frederick George “Fred” Tedder, Sr., 82, husband of Virginia S. Tedder, passed away Sunday, March 22, 2015, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.
Mr. Tedder was born August 27, 1932, in Florence, SC, a son of the late Freddie Tedder and Georgie Thames Tedder. He graduated from Kingstree High School and was a veteran of The Air Force. He was retired from Campbell Lumber Company. Mr. Fred was a member of Kingstree First Baptist Church, where he was a past deacon and also former general secretary for Sunday school.
In addition to his wife Virginia, Mr. Tedder is survived by: his daughter, Allyson Tedder, of Kingstree; two sons, George Tedder, of Florence, and Russell Tedder, of Kingstree, and a granddaughter, Holly Tedder, of Lake City. Mr. Fred was preceded in death by his parents. The family wishes to thank the staff at Carolinas Hospital System for their care and kindness during his hospitalization.

Mrs. Margaret Ellen Harrington Cantey, 71, passed away Saturday, March 21, 2015, at Williamsburg Regional Hospital in Kingstree.
Mrs. Ellen was born August 29, 1943, a daughter of the late Jacob Kinder Harrington and Elizabeth Carter Harrington. She graduated from East Clarendon High School and attended Williamsburg Technical College. Mrs. Ellen was a member of Midway Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed putting puzzles together, fishing, and playing cards.
Mrs. Ellen is survived by: her daughter, Peggy Evans (Dean) Holland, of Hayesville, NC; four grandchildren, Tabitha H. Davis, of Andrews, NC, Dean Lloyd (Jennifer) Holland, Jr., of Poquoson, VA, Brandon Patrick (Beth) Holland, of Murphy, NC, and Pauline H. (David) Jones, of Murphy; ten great grandchildren; one sister, Ann H. (Sanford) Roberson, of Lake Junaluska, NC; a brother, Ricky C. (JoAnn) Harrington, of New Zion, and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Ellen was preceded in death by her parents.

Mr. Oscar Howard Matthews, 79, husband of Mary Elizabeth “Libby” McAllister Matthews, passed away Wednesday, March 18, 2015, at McLeod Hospice House in Florence.
Mr. Matthews was born September 2, 1935, a son of the late Harley Matthews and Mamie Hudson Matthews. He graduated from Andrews High School and was a veteran of The National Guard. He worked for Milliken in Kingstree for 33 years and after retirement, he was an employee of the Kingstree Bi-Lo. Mr. Matthews was a member of Broad Swamp Pentecostal Holiness Church, where he was a longtime Sunday School Superintendent and served as a church deacon. Howard was an avid sports fan who truly loved the Gamecocks and all Williamsburg Academy athletics. He was a member of the WA Booster Club and supported the Stallions at every home game until his illness. In his spare time, Howard loved spending time with his grandchildren, going fishing, and tending his garden.
In addition to his wife Libby, Mr. Matthews is survived by: his children, Donald “Pee Wee” (Shari) Matthews, Joey (Fran) Matthews, and Cathy (Randell) Thompson; grandchildren, Sarah Matthews, Mason Matthews, and Carter Matthews; sisters, Oddie Mae Belton, Eulila (Edwin) Brockington, and Lennie (Willis) Tisdale; a brother-in-law Billy (Jeanette) McAllister; 2 sisters-in-law, Rose Carraway and Deola Cumbie; and a special nephew Robert “Bob” Carraway, as well as many other special nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Howard was preceded in death by 5 brothers and 3 sisters.

Virginia McIntosh Atkinson died on Wednesday morning, March 18, 2015 at Williamsburg Regional Hospital in Kingstree, where she had been admitted late Saturday with chronic pneumonia. Mrs. Atkinson, known from childhood to friends and family as Mickey, was born on May 12, 1933. She was the daughter of Louise Epps and Ernest McIntosh and the wife of the late Dr. Edward Atkinson. She graduated from Kingstree High School and Coker College, and she was a life-long member of the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, where as soon and as long as she could she taught children’s Sunday school classes and hosted women’s circle meetings.
Mrs. Atkinson has three children, Robert Edward (Stephanie) Atkinson, Jr., Louise Atkinson (David) Witherspoon, and Ernest McIntosh (Kelly) Atkinson; eight grandchildren, Richard Edward Gamble Atkinson, Virginia Witherspoon Merritt, Jane Gamble Atkinson Diaz, Anne Gillen Witherspoon, Alexander Wellington Atkinson, William David Witherspoon, III, James Mason Atkinson, and Ernest McIntosh Atkinson, Jr.; and one great-grandchild, Celeste Quetzali Atkinson Diaz.

Mr. Robert Frederick McElveen, Sr., 72, husband of Betty Owens McElveen, passed away Tuesday, March 3, 2015, at McLeod Regional Medical Center.
Mr. McElveen was born May 5, 1942, in Augusta, GA a son of the late Robert Ellie McElveen and Nettie Ziegler McElveen. He was a graduate of Kingstree High School and attended Clemson. Mr. Robert worked at Winslow Chevrolet, Rogers Motor Co., Longstreet Chevrolet, Life of Georgia, and taught auto mechanics at Williamsburg Technical College. He was a member of Sportsman Hunting Club and Kingstree United Methodist Church.
Surviving is: his wife Betty, of Kingstree; his son, Robbie (Cheryl) McElveen, of Anderson; his sister, Frances (James) Buddin, of Rock Hill; grandchildren, Mac, Ann, & Abby McElveen; 2 step children, Wayne Dickinson, of Bonneau, and Melissa (Greg) Snyder, of Jacksonville, NC; grandchildren, Zach and Megan Snyder; and 3 nieces, Becca (Jeff) Bowyer, of Rock Hill, Robin Davis, of Chapin, and Rachael (Marshall) Carter, of Seabrook. Victoria Nichole “Vickie” McKenzie and her son Gunner Madison Epps, died Monday, March 2, 2015, from injuries received in a house fire.
Vickie was born May 6, 1982, in Kingstree, a daughter of Troy and Bunny Taylor McKenzie. She was a graduate of Kingstree High School and was a home health caregiver. She was a member of Sandy Bay Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Gunner, son of Drayton Michael “Dray” Epps and Victoria Nichole McKenzie, was born December 19, 2013, in Columbia, SC.
Vickie is survived by: her parents, Troy and Bunny; her fiancée, Drayton Epps, 2 sisters Tina McKenzie of Cades and Mitsy (Jimmy) Foxworth of Kingstree, 3 brothers Rocky (Viney) McKenzie, Danny McKenzie and Ray McKenzie all of Kingstree, and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Cynthia was born October 8, 1953, in Anderson, a daughter of the late Furman Tallevast and Juanita Frederick Tallevast. She graduated from Williamsburg Academy and Columbia Commercial College. Mrs. Black was a hostess at Pier 14 in Myrtle Beach and was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. She loved all animals, flower arranging and crafting.
Surviving is: a daughter, Cullen Black Ard, of NC; a very special friend, Donnie Kight, of Conway; a sister, Laura Cantley, of Nesmith; 3 grandchildren, Jordan Alexis Black, of NC, Michelle Renee Ard, of Darlington and Katherine Rianna Ard, of NC; a niece, Sarah C. Hoff, of Kingstree, and a nephew, Ray Cantley III, of Kingstree. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Louise Tallevast.

Mr. Nexsen was born March 19, 1940, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Leland Ivy and Eleida Parrott Nexsen. He attended Kingstree schools and was retired from Kingstree Manufacturing Co. after 43 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter Robin Elizabeth Nexsen and 7 brothers and sisters.
Surviving, in addition to his wife Elizabeth are: 2 daughters, Wanda N. (Lamar) Wilkes, of Florence, and Jennifer N. (Jason) Holliday, of Kingstree; 3 sisters, Betty Lou Culick of Scranton, Alma Nexsen of Cades, and Mary Sue Hewitt of Myrtle Beach; 2 brothers, Billy Nexsen of Cades and Paul Nexsen of Scranton; 4 grandchildren, Ashley Lee (Bubba) Richardson, David Adam Lee, Katherine Ann Holliday and Jason Leland Holliday; great grandchild Benjamin Aiden Richardson; step grandchild Sommer Wilkes (Brantley) Broach; and step great grandchild Carmen Marie Broach.

Mrs. Smith was born July 24, 1925, in Florence, a daughter of the late Marshall P. Floyd and Ella McAllister Floyd. She was retired and a member of Broad Swamp Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Surviving is a son, Larry R. Flowers, of Kingstree, and many loving nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond Floyd and Ted McAllister; three sisters, Gretchen McDonald, Chrystal Bingham, Iva Nell Matthews; two husbands, Rossie Flowers and Eady Smith.

Mrs. Baker was born in Olanta, SC, on November 5, 1925, a daughter of the late John Bunyan and Zera McKenzie Sims. Buena graduated from high school in 1943 and one of her first jobs was as a typist for the supply clerk supplying ships at the Charleston Navy Yard. She also worked as a stenographer for Graham Insurance Agency and at Wentworth Manufacturing as a payroll clerk. Mrs. Baker was a member of Kingstree United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Wallace Connor Sunday School Class and The Leila Epps Circle of the United Methodist Women. She was a member of Three Rivers Historical Society and the Margaret Gregg Gordon Chapter of the DAR, had worked as a volunteer for the American Cancer Society, and as a volunteer in the gift shop at Williamsburg Regional Hospital. One of her most precious compliments was when her grandson Baker, who was about 5 or 6 years old, stood up in church on Mothers Day and said, “I am thankful Grandmama taught my mama how to be a good mama.”
Surviving, in addition to her husband of 65 years, Calvin Baker, of Greeleyville, SC, are: her daughters, Faith (John) Hopkins, of Conway, Arkansas and Margie (Winn) Myers, of Greeleyville; 4 grandchildren, David Hopkins and Mark Hopkins, of Conway, AR, Marla M. (Timothy) Godwin, of Kingstree , and Baker Myers, of Florence, SC; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Baker was preceded in death by a foster brother, George V. (Eva Dell) Sims, a brother Ray B. (Annie Lee) Sims, and sisters, Lois Sims and Gertie (DeLeon) Weaver.

Mr. Richard Jaudon “Dickie” Blakely, Sr., 83, husband of Joyce Currier Blakely, passed away Friday, January 23, 2015, at Grand Strand Hospital, in Myrtle Beach.
Mr. Blakely was born March 18, 1931, in Lane, a son of the late Thomas A. Blakely, Sr. and Rheta Derrick Blakely. He was a graduate of Kingstree High School and attended University of Maryland. Mr. Dickie was a member of Lane Methodist Church, Kingstree Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Shriner, Moose Lodge and VFW.
Mr. Blakely retired in 1971 at the rank of Master Sergeant after 23 years from the U.S. Air Force and received numerous awards. In 1965, he was awarded The Certificate for the Joint Chiefs of Staff Identification Badge for performance and loyalty to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In 1968, he was awarded the D.O.D Joint Service Commendation Award for his service with the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, DC. In 1971, he was awarded Medal for Meritorious Service with the Southern Command from 1968 to 1971.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Joyce C. Blakely, are: a daughter, Jane (Ricky) Burrows, of Kingstree; a son, Richard J. (Linda) Blakely, Jr., of Kingstree; a sister, Mary Florence Geddings, of James Island; grandchildren, Richard J. (Kim) Blakely III, Kristen B. (Jeremy) Gilchrist; great grandchildren, Richard J. Blakely IV and Elizabeth Gilchrist. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas A. Blakely, Jr.

Mrs. Harrington was born February 6, 1921, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Richard D. Carter and Julius Annie Scott Carter. She was the Valedictorian of the Class of 1938 at Kingstree High School and retired in 1982 as bookkeeper for the Williamsburg County Treasurer’s office. Mrs. Harrington was a member of Midway Presbyterian Church, where she was active in the Presbyterian Women. She loved gardening, fishing, and playing cards with her Oakdale friends.
Surviving are: 2 daughters, Ellen Cantey, of Kingstree and Ann H. (Sanford) Roberson, of Lake Junaluska, NC; a son, Ricky (JoAnn) Harrington, of New Zion; 7 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and several great great grandchildren. In addition to her husband Jacob and her parents, Mrs. Harrington was preceded in death by 3 sisters and 1 brother.

Mrs. Jacqueline “Jackie” Anne Evans Graham, 62, passed away on January 15, 2015, at her residence.
Mrs. Graham was born November 30, 1952, in Kingstree, a daughter of the late Harvey Jerome Evans and Sally Ann Parrott Masters. She was a graduate of Hebron High School and attended Francis Marion University. Mrs. Graham was a retired Chief Engineer of South Carolina Department of Transportation. She enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking and gardening.
Surviving are: a son, Sumter Graham, of Greeleyville; a daughter, Alexandra (Chuck) Overman, of Hope Mills, NC; four brothers, Jerry Evans, of Florence, Steve (Robin) Evans, of Kingstree, Mike Evans, of Jacksonville, FL, Tom Evans, of Jacksonville, FL; a sister, Sally Evans, of Jacksonville, FL, and three grandchildren, Hannah, Caleb and Julianne Overman, of Hope Mills, NC. Mrs. Graham was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Frankie.

Ernest was born in Valerie, Kentucky on September 10th, 1929, a son of the late Younger and Lily Brown Bowman. He grew up in Lexington, Kentucky, graduated from Henry Clay High School, and attended Asbury College in Wilmore, Kentucky. He graduated from Southeastern University and Atlantic Christian College. He spent four years in the Air Force stationed at Shaw Air Force Base and Wiesbaden, Germany during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1955. He married Gloria Joye Humphrey from Kingstree, SC in 1953. Reverends’ Ernest and Joye, along with their three children, Gloria, Debbie and Sam, served as missionaries in Guatemala, Central America, for 16 years, coming back to the United States in 1979. Reverends’ Ernest and Joye also pastored churches in South Carolina and Florida. Ernest served with Poyner Adult Education for 15 years. Ernest was a loving, committed, adoring and sensitive husband. He was a magnificent, doting dad (“Papito”) as well as a fabulous granddad (“Lito”, “Toto”).
Ernest is survived by: his wife of 61 years, Joye; their three children, Gloria Gayle Bowman-Williamson (Eddie) Whiteville, NC, Deborah Marie Bowman-Nunez (Dr. Gregory Nunez) Dillon, SC, and Samuel Bowman (Jakelyn) Hanes City, Florida; seven grandchildren, Patrick Williamson, Erica-Brooke Williamson, Johanna Nunez, Aaron Nunez, Alexis Nunez, James Nunez and Lainey Bowman; and two brothers, Roy (Golda) and Earl (Aloma). In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five siblings, Allen, Ellis, Younger, Vivian Boggs and Ina Marie Foley.
A private graveside funeral service with military honors will be held Monday, January 12th, 2015, at Kingstree Memorial Gardens in Kingstree, SC. A celebration of Reverend Ernest Bowman’s life will be held 2 PM Saturday January 17, 2015, in Dillon Church of God in Dillon. Mr. Kenneth R. Williamson, 86, husband of Avisteriah “Dotsie” Williamson, passed away on January 9, 2015, in McLeod Hospital.
Mr. Williamson was born March 27, 1928, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late George Furman Williamson and Lena Padgett Williamson. He was a High School graduate and attended Clemson College. Mr. Williamson was a WW II Veteran, a Tax Assessor for 24 years and an avid gardener. He was an active member of Kingstree First Baptist Church where he was a trustee, deacon and a member of the George Avent Sunday School Class.
Surviving in addition to his wife “Dotsie” are many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Williamson was preceded in death by 9 siblings.

Mrs. Boyd was born March 17, 1930, in Kingstree, a daughter of the late Sidney Brown and Bessie Parnell Brown. She was a graduate of Kingstree High School, attended college, and taught elementary school for many years. Mrs. Boyd was an active member of Central Presbyterian Church where she was a member of the Women in the Church.
Surviving are: her son John W. (Martha) Boyd, III, of Hemingway; her daughter, Denise Boyd, of Moncks Corner; grandson, Caleb (Shanda) Boyd, of Johnsonville; great-grand daughter, Kassidy Denise Boyd, of Johnsonville; a brother–in-law, Charles (Vernon) Boyd, of Hartsville; extended family, Matthew Britt, Hallie Sabb, and Susan Lee; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and her husband, J.W. Boyd, Mrs. Hattie Mae was preceded in death by 9 siblings.

Mr. Wells was born August 30, 1937, a son of the late Frank Wells and Bessie Mae Griffin. He was a High School graduate and an Army Veteran. Mr. Wells was a tradesman and a member of the New York Tradesman Union. He was a member of Lake City Pentecostal Holiness Church, Masonic Temple in Greeleyville, SC and he was a volunteer for the local food bank and Meals on Wheels.
Surviving in addition to his wife Honey are: a son, Dominick Eugene Wells; a daughter, Susan Kozlowski; grandchildren, Nadia and Nancy; great grandson, Anthony; 3 sisters, Debbie Dowdel, Emily Floyd, Teena Smith; and multiple nieces and nephews. Margaret Daniels Britton 83, widow of Joseph D. Britton, Sr., passed away on January 6, 2015, at her son’s residence.
Margaret was born in Manning on September 17, 1931, a daughter of the late George Muldrow Daniels and Lessie Kennedy Daniels. She was a graduate of Manning High School and was the Salutatorian. She was retired from McGill Distributors and later worked at Kingstree Fabric and Kiddie Shop and Tomlinson’s. She was a member of Union Presbyterian Church, where she was a former chairman of the Louise Burrows Circle and an active member of The Women in the Church. She was a member of The Red Hat Society and Gardens Makers Garden Club. Margaret was a devoted wife, a caring mother and grandmother, and always loved being with her family and extended family.
Surviving are: a daughter, Allison Britton (Marty) Inman; a son, Joseph Daniel “Jody” (Lisa) Britton, Jr.; 4 grandchildren, JD and John Floyd Britton and Alexa and Britton Inman; special caregivers, Judy Jowers, Donna Patterson, Willie Tisdale, Beverly Flowers, and Abby Moore. In addition to her parents and her husband, J.D. Britton, she was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Loy Daniels.
