Anita Freed Marcus, 77, widow of David Joel Marcus, died Monday April 21, 2025, at her home in Kingstree.
Anita was born in Sumter, SC, a daughter of the late Hyman and Betty Finke Freed. She was a graduate of Sumter High School and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ohio State University. She owned and operated Anita Marcus School of Dance for 30 years in Kingstree, and taught dance in Manning, Andrews and other towns throughout her career. She also worked with her husband David in the Kingstree Travel Agency for many years. Anita loved to needlepoint and going to the beach. She also loved to help people and was a strong supporter and advocate for women’s rights. Anita was a member of Temple Beth Or in Kingstree.
Anita is survived by two sons, Michael Marcus, of Kingstree, and Charlie Marcus (Rebecca Smerling) of Lexington, MA; 3 grandchildren, Sophie, Ruby, and Asher Marcus; 3 sisters, Barbara Freed James (Tommie), Andrea Freed Levinson (Joe), and Judi Freed Siegfried (Kevin).
She was preceded in death by her husband, and a grandson, Drew Micha Marcus.

    Oh Anita..you taught me so much. At age 14 in 1974…my first job teaching for 4 years. You supported my entrance in the SC Jr Miss pageant. You with your talented sister Andrea opened my mind and training in NYC summers 1976 & 1977. Thank you for all you have given to me ..and to so many others. Peace
