Emma Kate Brown, 17, daughter of James L. Brown and Karen Brown Johnston passed away on March 24, 2023.

Emma was a senior at Denmark High School in Alpharetta, GA. Emma attended Williamsburg Academy in Kingstree, SC from first through eighth grade where she was very active in school activities and sports.  She loved cheerleading and enjoyed spending time with her cheer squad. Emma was a member of Williamsburg Presbyterian Church and actively participated in Kingstree Community Youth.

Emma’s heart was big and beautiful, and she loved being with family and friends. She was incredibly talented as she created stunning crafts and artwork. Emma had a passion for hiking and would often hike trails in North Georgia with family and friends. She loved anything outdoors, snow-skiing with family, and spending time fishing with her Dad. Emma had many pets growing up and enjoyed caring for animals.  She loved doing her make-up, going shopping with her friends and sisters, and driving around listening to Taylor Swift way too loudly. “Emmie”, as she was affectionately called, loved for everything to smell good like vanilla. She loved creating things for others to bring them joy, which included baking birthday cakes for her family, especially sewing, knitting, and crocheting blankets and toys for her little brother Crew. Emma loved experiencing new restaurants, new shops, and often said she loved the feeling of exploring new places. Emma was passionate about anything in nature, and especially had a love for flowers and sunsets. You could often find her spending time outside studying the earth and searching for four-leaf clovers. She never passed up an opportunity to take her little sister, Kylie, to get an after-school treat from Starbucks or Chick-Fil-A. Emma was always willing to extend a hand of service and loved supporting and helping her Mom, Dad, and siblings any way she could.

Emma’s contagious laugh and big smile brought so much happiness and warmth to so many people. Her friends expressed how her love and kindness helped them through their hardest days and how selfless she was.

Emma Kate is survived by her father Jay Brown; her mother Karen Brown Johnston; her sisters Milli Brown and Kylie Foxworth; her brother Crew Johnston; her grandparents Rob and Annette Terblanche; Grandmother Julie Brown; her Aunt Lauri (Andy) Stevenson; her Uncle Mike (Alicia) Terblanche; and many other dear family members and friends.

Emma is now reunited in Heaven with her “Deda”, James L. Brown, Jr.

Emma, you were gone too soon. From sitting in the bathroom stall with you talking about your senior quote to you not getting to read it. You had such a kind beautiful soul. You never judged. You were kind even when others were not. You are gone way too soon. I look for you in every sunrise and sunset. Not a day goes by where i do not think of you. Your memory will be alive until the day i die. I will think about you everyday for the rest of my life. May you rest in peace.

I wish you all the best in your healing process. I may have not known you or Emma but from what i’ve gathered she was an amazing girl. Losing her is horrible, but her memory will live on within you forever.
