Esther Maye Newman McClary, 93, widow of Louie Claude McClary, passed away Sunday, May 10, 2020, in McLeod Hospice House of Florence.
Mrs. McClary was born July 2, 1926, in Sumter County, a daughter of the late Joseph Roland and Alice Josey Newman. She was a graduate of Sumter High School and received a nursing degree from Tuomey Hospital School of Nursing. While raising her young children, Mrs. Esther stayed home and helped her husband run McClary Country Store. Later she returned to her nursing career as a head nurse at Williamsburg Regional Hospital and retired from there as a nursing supervisor. She was a member of Kingstree United Methodist Church and active with the Hospitality Committee and the Wallace Connor Sunday School Class. Mrs. Esther mentored many young girls through her role as adult leader for Girl Scout Troop 99. She enjoyed reading, cross stitching, coloring, ceramics and traveling with her husband Claude throughout the United States.
Surviving are: her children, Alice Marie (Don) Beck, of Mt. Pleasant; Louie C. “Butch” (Sally) McClary, Jr., of Salem, SC; and Mallory (Robin Mouzon) McClary, of Salters; grandchildren, David and Brian Beck, Patrick McClary, Susan Snyder, Jennifer Lewis, and April Pitts; and 10 great grandchildren. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins in whom she took special interest and love. Mrs. Esther was preceded in death by her husband Claude, a grandson, Christopher McClary and her 3 brothers.
The family would like to thank all her care givers over the past year. We also appreciate all the love she received from members of her church family.

I was saddened to hear that Mrs, Esther has passed. I always enjoyed talking with her at the library. She was a precious lady and will be missed greatly by all who knew her. May God’s grace be sufficient for the days ahead. Imagine the joy of crossing the gate into heaven and seeing Jesus face to face! Prayers are being lifted for all of you. F.R.O.G. Fully rely on God. In all things. Always. <3
We will surely miss Ms. Esther at KUMC! She was such a faithful member; it was a joy to see her in “her” pew each Sunday. She was especially nice to us when we arrived in Kingstree, and we appreciated her kindness. We will be thinking of her family during these sad days of transition and hope they find peace and that they will rejoice in their fond memories of her.
I cannot express what an influence Ms. Esther was to me in the field of medicine. She set the perfect example of clinical skills and compassion not only for her patients but for those of us she mentored! We will never know how many lives she touched and made a difference in. She was an AWESOME nurse.
Praying for her family.

We are so sorry to hear of your loss. May the Lord comfort your family during this time with the knowledge that this is only a temporary separation and joy comes in the morning.
So sorry for your loss. “Miss” Ester was a wonderful lady that I had the privilege of working with for many years. All of you are in my thoughts and prayers.
What a sweet lady. Thought of her last week, wondering how she was. We worked together at Williamsburg’s hospital in middle 60’s until I left in 69. A caring and compassion nurse. Thought and prayers for comfort and peace.
Mallory and family, we are so sorry to hear of your loss. Thoughts and prayers to you all.

Mrs. Esther was a supervisor at Williamsburg Hospital when I worked there in the 70s. She was a wonderful person who cared for her patients. Working in the Business Office, I was privileged to know her. Her work ethic and knowledge was superior.
What a wonderful lady! My thoughts and prayers are with you.
We are thinking of all of you.

Inga and I send our love and prayers.
Alice Marie, I just found out about your mom. I remember fondly growing up near you and our going to your house. I think I probably still have a picture of you at one of my birthday parties in the backyard on the Andrews Highway. I will be thinking about you and keeping you in my prayers.
