Jack Marcellous McCrea, 73, husband of Janet Ruehl McCrea, died Sunday, September 28, 2025, at his home in the Cedar Swamp Community surrounded by family.
Jack was born July 22, 1952, in Williamsburg County, SC, the son of the late Lathan Marcellous McCrea and Moeaden Eaddy McCrea. He was a graduate of Kingstree High School and earned his degree in Ag Education from Clemson University in 1974. Jack was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying farming, fishing and hunting on his land in Cedar Swamp. He was a faithful member of Central Presbyterian Church serving as Elder Emeritus. He served 18 years with the Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services in Williamsburg County and was elected Sheriff of Williamsburg County in 1993, where he served for 5 years. Jack was a family man and a fantastic cook, enjoying time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren, over any meal he prepared.
Surviving Mr. McCrea, in addition to his wife of 50 years Janet, are: two sons, William Marcellous McCrea (Shannon) and Carl Ruehl McCrea (Chasity) both of Kingstree; five grandchildren, Jennifer Grace McCrea, Emma Bailey McCrea, Shelby Ryan McCrea, Jack Marcellous McCrea and Summer Ruehl McCrea; two sisters, Nellie Harriette McCrea and Donna Jane McCrea; a special sister, Noreen K. Steward; and his “Hog Dog” JoJo.

Janet, Johnny and I are so terribly sorry. Jack was a man among men. A wonderful person, lawman, citizen, husband and father. We so admired and appreciated the life he led. You will be in our hearts and prayers.

Jack was a friend that could always lift your spirits. He always had the ability to make you laugh. Enjoyed many meals with him and he taught me how to cook many delicious “men’s” dishes. Was a great sheriff and friend. Praying for Janet, Carl and Mark.
Jack was such a fine man in so many ways! He always welcomed me as part of the family. He taught me so much about barbecuing hogs, making liver pudding, and cracklins! Everything he cooked was delicious! He always led with a quiet gentleness and sense of humor. His Loving Memory will live on!!! I am filled with Gratitude!

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. When I started my law enforcement career I first met Mr jack he was a great kind man and he will be missed but never forgotten. His service to Williamsburg county was from his heart.

Was in the same grade as Jack during our 10 years at Indiantown. He and I were “Harvest King and Queen” I believe in third grade. My condolences to his family. Prayers for you all.
So sorry to hear of Jack’s passing, your family is in my prayers! Jack was always so kind and so much fun! He will be greatly missed. He always had time to listen and always gave good advice suggesting that you and God could handle the situation. We were not as close as cousins could be but the knowledge that he was always there was such a comfort. May God give your hearts the peace and comfort only He can give. Such a shock! My heart truly goes out to his family! Such a great loss, he was truly a fine and kind, loving, and jolly person who will be greatly missed. Always just knowing he was there was such a comfort. So sorry I did not know this sooner and could have been there. Know my prayers and my heartfelt wishes are with you all. Jack and I were hired the same day at Probation, Parole, and Pardon Services, September 30, 1975. You could not ask for a better coworker. My condolences to Janet and the entire McCrea Family.
Mr. McCrea was a beautiful person who has a beautiful family. I’m so sorry for your broken hearts but share in your celebration knowing he’s no longer sick and hurting.
