Jessie Dale Price McCollough, 85, wife of the late Samuel Edward “Ted” McCullough, died Sunday, September 25, 2022, at Williamsburg Regional Hospital in Kingstree.

Funeral services will be 11 AM, Thursday, September 29, 2022, at Williamsburg Presbyterian Church in Kingstree, with burial in Kingstree Memorial Gardens. Mrs. McCollough’s family will receive friends 5 to 7 PM Wednesday at Williamsburg Funeral Home.

Mrs. McCollough was born September 19, 1937, in Troy, SC, a daughter of the late William Burton Price and Mary Bernice Puckett Price. She was a graduate of Greenwood High School in Greenwood, SC. In 1959, she received a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education and Christian Education from Erskine College and did graduate work at USC and Columbia College.

Mrs. McCollough taught music in Kingstree public schools from 1959 to 1968. She was the organist at Williamsburg Presbyterian (USA) Church from 1959 to 1961 and the organist/choir director there from 1976 to 2010. “Miss Jessie Dale” taught piano to numerous local students over the years. She also taught music at Williamsburg Academy in Kingstree from 1999 to 2006. She left a lasting legacy with the numerous students she taught as many of these students not only remember the songs she taught them, but the tunes and words still come to them easily.

A lifelong Presbyterian, Mrs. McCollough’s “home church” was Troy Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in Troy, SC, where she first shared her gift of music by playing for church while attending the eighth grade in school. She was a member here until her marriage to Ted in 1962 when she joined Union Presbyterian Church and served as their organist until she joined Williamsburg Presbyterian Church and became their organist. At Williamsburg Presbyterian, she and Ted served as youth advisors from 1980 to 1987. Jessie retired from being organist there in 2010 but returned as their pianist for several years.

Daughters of the American Revolution was a big part of Jessie Dale’s life. She joined the Margaret Gregg Gordon Chapter in Kingstree on December 13, 1991, serving as regent for six terms, and reviving a dying chapter to an active chapter in that first term. She served as Vice Regent for three terms and was currently serving as Chapter Vice Regent. Mrs. McCollough’s service to DAR continued on to the state level, where she served as Scholarship Chairman from 2006 to 2009. During this time, South Carolina received its first National Scholarship. She was an Alternate for District VI from 2006 to 2009 and was chairman of decorations for the 2009 Spring Conference. She was District VI Director from 2009 to 2012 and chairman of Fall Forum 2011. Jessie was the pianist for Founder’s Day and Awards Day at Tamassee as well as the pianist for the Patriotic Luncheon, Continental Congress, in Washington, DC. She served as the State Historian from 2013 to 2015, the American History Chairman from 2015 to 2018, and the Music Chairman from 2019 to 2021. In 2020, she became an associate member of the Elizabeth Peyre Richardson Chapter of DAR in Manning, SC.  Jessie was also a member of Dames of the Court of Honor, a membership given only to those who are descended from a Patriot officer in the Revolution.

Community service was also important to Jessie.  She served on many boards and committees over the years including the Board of Directors of Williamsburg Academy (1975-78), Kingstree Planning and Zoning Board (1980 – 2009) serving as Chairman of that board 1987 – 2009 and 2017- present, the Williamsburg County Development Board Landscape Committee developing the new industrial park, and just this year, the Williamsburgh Historical Society Board as well as their 250 Committee planning Williamsburg County’s Sestercentennial. Beautification of our community was always paramount to Jessie. She showed that in her choices of serving others. Jessie was a member of three local garden clubs, Garden Makers Garden Club, Green Thumb Garden Club, and Home and Garden Club. She served at the state, regional and national level as well, becoming a Life Member of Garden Club of SC, a Life Member, South Atlantic Region of National Garden Clubs, Inc, and a Life Member of National Garden Clubs, Inc. During this time she served in many leadership roles, especially on the state level at Garden Clubs of SC: Landscape School Chairman and several other chairmanships, Coastal District Director, Third Vice President, Second Vice President, First Vice President, and President from 1993 to 1995. Jessie also served on the board of the National Council of State Garden Clubs. She was a longtime member of the Kingstree Beautification Committee and received the “Lady Bird Johnson Award” from the Williamsburg Hometown Chamber of Commerce. Jessie was appointed by the Governor to the SC Department of Natural Resources Advisory Committee of Conservation, Education and Communication and served there from 1995 to 2008.

In addition to all that she accomplished, Jessie Dale was an avid Atlanta Braves fan and SC Gamecock fan (especially football and basketball) and she watched or attended every game that she could.

Surviving Mrs. McCollough are: two daughters, Dale McCollough (John) Culbreth of Columbia and Julie McCollough (Ryan) Delaney of Spartanburg; two beloved granddaughters, Lillian Elizabeth Delaney and Virginia Anne Delaney. In addition to her parents and her husband of 28 years, Ted, who died in 1990, Jessie Dale was preceded in death by a beloved aunt who was more like a sister, Julia “Judy” Puckett Edwards.

Memorials may be made to Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, 411 N. Academy Street, Kingstree, SC 29556 or Tamassee DAR School, PO Box 8, Tamassee, SC 29686. Online condolences may be sent to the family on the obituary page at www.WilliamsburgFuneralHome.com

This, I’m having great difficulty understanding as well as acknowledging. Truly one of my favorite ladies of Kingstree. I just mentioned her to a friend saying, Mrs. Jessie Dale would ask me, “Why aren’t you going to church!!!” Not quite a scream, or yell, but a stern, direct question in a manner that only a person dedicated to a lifetime of teaching could express. I’ll never forget her. She really cared about me and I truly loved her for it. She was proud of her heritage and I really admired that. She was always true to her convictions and she could care less what anyone thought about it. Rest in peace my dear lady. You will be sorely missed.

Jessie Dale was my dear friend and DAR roommate. We shared many wonderful experiences as we attended State Conferences, Fall Forum, traveled on the DAR bus to Continental Congress in Washington, DC, attended Founders Day and other events at Tamassee and around the State of South Carolina. She will always hold a special place in my heart. I am praying for each of you in her family that God will grant you His peace and knowing that we will see each other again in Heaven.

Such a very fine lady we have lost. I recall with fondness her music classes at KES. That’s the first time I heard and sang the Sound of Music songs. A true treasure is with us no more, but in a much better place. 🙏

    John and Dale,

I was sorry to hear of Jessie Dale’s passing. She was an exceptional person, down-to-earth but with a distinctly southern charm. She reminded me so much of Alice Hill Murphy. I enjoyed visiting with her during the times she came to Black River Church Homecoming. I know y’all will miss her terribly. My sincere condolences.

  14. David Mercer

As I text this, I fondly recall the beautiful music Jessie Dale provided for us at Wmsbg. Pres. Church and her music class at Kingstree Elem. School where a lot of us were selected for her operettas, even going to Columbia one year to appear on ETV. I might add, I was the only one to leave my costume’s cap back at school that day but she forgave me. May I add that I’ll always appreciate her concern for me a number of years ago when I was going through some serious med. issues as expressed in her cards. As at this moment her service is beginning, I’ll pause and say a prayer for the family of “Miss Jessie”. May God comfort and bless you.
