John Gilmore Yager passed away peacefully on January 26, 2026, at home. He
was 81.
His parents were Jean and Lewis Yager. John was born in Kentucky and enjoyed his youth spending time on his grandparents’ farm. He often talked about those years, and the gentle work ethic inspired him. John graduated from the Virginia Military Institute with a BS in Physics, and earned his Ph.D. in Neurophysiology from the University of Tennessee, where he also obtained his M.D. After becoming board certified in Neurology at MUSC in Charleston, he and Betsy moved to Mobile, Alabama, where he practiced medicine for many years. He was a member of the American Academy of Neurology. John and Betsy loved to travel, and enjoyed many river cruises throughout Europe, once crossing the Atlantic by sailing ship. John became immersed in Mobile life, sailing on Mobile Bay, and the Gulf in his beloved sailboat, “The Bets”. He was a member of a Mardi Gras mystic society, the Mobile Navy League, and the Mobile Yacht Club, where he was Commodore for two years. John was a member of Ashland Place Methodist Church, and later Union Presbyterian Church in Salters.
John will be remembered as an honorable and faithful man, who loved to laugh. He pulled everything he could from life, sometime struggling, but never complaining.
John is survived by his sister, Sara Sue Yager (Sherron), his stepson, Rusty
McCarver (Dianna), many cousins, and his loving wife, Betsy.
A celebration of John’s life will take place later. Memorials in John’s name may be made to the Mobile Yacht Club Sailing School 4925 Marina Drive South Mobile, Alabama 36605. Online condolences may be sent to the family on the obituary page at www.WilliamsburgFuneralHome.com.
