Joseph Eston Lane Jr., husband of the late Frances Fitch Lane, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2025, in Wilmore, Kentucky. He was 92.
Junior was born June 4, 1932, near Kingstree in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Joseph Eston and Sarah “Sadie” Duke Lane. As a young man, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served three years in Japan and Korea. After returning home, he farmed the family land and married Frances in 1957. Junior later joined the Kingstree Police Department in 1966 and retired in 1988 as assistant chief. Afterward, he continued to enjoy hunting and fishing, woodworking and winemaking, cooking for a crowd, and solving the world’s problems with the Hardee’s crew over biscuits and gravy every morning.
After a mild stroke in April 2024, Junior went to live with his elder daughter in Kentucky. He then spent the last five months at Thomson-Hood Veterans Center.
Junior is survived by two daughters, Tammy Laneigh Lane (Sara M. Sexton) of Lexington, Kentucky; and Lori-Eston Lane Gildersleeve (Scott E.) of Mount Pleasant; a sister, Carolyn Lane McConnell of Kingstree; and sisters-in-law Jeanie Lane of Kingstree and Ruby Lane of Florence.
Along with his parents and wife, Junior was preceded in death by siblings Grace Robinson, Charles “Bogan” Lane, Miriam McCain, Lloyd Lane, Emory Lane, and half-siblings Jack Lane, Thella Mae Kennedy, Marguerite Young, Wilton Lane, Cathryn Frierson, and Mamie Lucille Lane.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, at Mouzon Presbyterian Church (2644 Sumter Hwy., Kingstree), with the graveside service following. Memorials may be made to the Frances Lane Scholarship Fund, c/o Jeannette Duke, 2281 Sumter Hwy., Kingstree S.C., 29556. I am sorry to learn of Jr.s” passing. My memories as a young boy of enjoying his company at Uncle Carroll’s and Aunt Willie Belle’s are so pleasant. And I will always remember that my fondness for Farmall one-row tractors came from my first experience operating his “Super A” in the tobacco fields on the family farm on the edge of Black River. Good times!

    Sending love and prayers.
