Joseph George “Joe” Gudenas, Jr, 89, loving husband of the late Carolyn Player Gudenas, died Saturday, September 6, 2025, in Rock Hill, SC.
Joe was born May 19, 1936, in Chicago, IL, the son of the late Joseph George Gudenas, Sr. and Lucille Mathony Gudenas. He was a graduate of St. George’s High School in Evanston, IL and kept in touch with the school and classmates throughout the years. Joe was a proud veteran of the US Army, serving for two years as a Light Weapons Infantryman with Airborne training, earning the Basic Parachutist badge. He and Carolyn were married on June 21, 1956. Joe had a long career in retail management, retiring from W.S. McCollough and Sons in Salters in 2007, after over 25 years there. One of his greatest and most treasured achievements was being a Grandpa and Great-Grandpa. He was a faithful member of Mount Vernon Methodist Church, serving in many volunteer positions including several years as president of United Methodist Men. In later years Joe enjoyed a new career as a gentleman farmer. He was an avid golfer, loved sports of all kinds, gardening, traveling, fishing, metal detecting, and beach combing.
Joe is survived by his son Joseph George “Jay” (Debbie) Gudenas, III of Rock Hill; 2 grandsons, Joseph E. “Joey” (Kellie) Gudenas of Portland, OR and Brian L. (Shahad) Gudenas of Lititz, PA; and three great grandchildren, Evie and Max Gudenas of Portland, OR and Farrah Gudenas of Lititz, PA; a nephew, Scott Pittman of Chicago, IL; and a niece, Linda Christy of Crystal Lake, IL. In addition to his parents and his wife Carolyn, Joe was preceded in death by a sister, Marion Gudenas Pittman and a niece, Sandra Houghton.
