Michael Lee Horton, Sr., husband of the late Cheryl Smith Horton, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on April 13, 2023. He was 74 years old.
Born October 25, 1948, in Kingstree, he was the son of the late Edward Conyers Horton and the late Verdessa Thor Horton. He was a proud 1971 graduate of Clemson University, with a Bachelors of Science in Chemical Engineering. Upon graduation, he served as teacher at St. Mark Elementary School in Kingstree, SC for one year. He then was employed by Baxter first as chemist, then chemical engineer. Following this, he was employed by Gist-Brocades as project engineer, and engineering manager. He then served as engineering manager for International Biosynthetics. Later, he and six others purchased the site from IBIS and created Ferm-Pro Manufacturing where he served as Vice President of Engineering until its acquisition by Martek. He served as Director of Engineering for Martek Biosciences until his retirement in 2011. Then he served as an engineering consultant to DSM Nutritional Products.
Mike was a founding, and faithful member of Kingstree Presbyterian Church (PCA), where he served as elder, deacon, and Sunday school teacher. He was a strong, godly man with an endearing presence, who will be remembered as a devoted husband and loving father. He adored his grandchildren and was a doting “Bebop”. His godly example of humility and wisdom, along with his witty sense of humor, will be forever missed.
He is survived by his son Michael “Lee” Horton, Jr. (Allison) of Lynchburg, SC; daughter Michelle Horton Gall (Nathan) of Auburndale, FL; grandchildren Michael Lee Horton, III, Gamble Thomas Horton, Edward Conyers Horton, Kate Marie McFaddin Horton, Jack Nolen Gall, Wyatt Nathan Gall, and Julia Debra Nadine Gall.
Michael is now reunited in heaven with his wife, Cheryl Smith Horton and daughter, Christina Sara Horton.

We are thinking of all of you with much love.

My sincerest sympathy to Mike’s family. I went to school with Margaret and Eddie. They lived close to us years ago. Mike and my little brother were close in age. I know Mike will be missed. Very fine family.
Rest in peace my friend and fellow classmate.
Mike has been a friend, neighbor and Godly example to all who knew him. He will be missed by family but welcomed by his heavenly family.
I’m so very sorry for your loss
Sending sincere condolences to the Horton family. Danny thought the world of the Hortons and I’m so glad I got to meet Lee and his family during DSM events and Clemson games. I loved seeing pictures of them all at Clemson games—making special memories for a lifetime.
Michael was like my big brother when I was growing up in Kingstree. My family, the Bugays, and the Hortons, Tillers and Bartons did so much together. I called Michael’s dad and mom Uncle and Aunt because we were so close. I used to ride on the oil truck with Michael and taking oil to the tobacco barns in the summer! I am so saddened of the news of him passing, my condolences to all of his family!
I am so sorry. Thinking of you all.
So sorry to see this. May God bless 🙏🏻
So sorry for your loss. We thought a lot of Mike and will miss seeing him down on Calhoun Dr.
what a wonderful talent which is gone too soon. Kingstree is truly blessed to have had him with us. He loved our Heavenly Father and Lord Jesus Christ. Condolences to all of you.
Our prayers and love go out to Michelle and Lee and their families. Mike and Cheryl were some of the first friends we made when we moved to Kingstree 40+ years ago. We will miss both of them.
My heartfelt condolences are extended to the family of Michael Horton. I had the privilege of knowing Mike as a school classmate. May God Bless the Family.
Heartfelt condolences for Mr. Mike’s family. It’s been such a pleasure knowing him throughout the years. May he rest in peace.
