Mrs. Shelby Fairey McCutchen, 69, wife of James David McCutchen, Sr., died unexpectedly Saturday, November 1, 2014, at MUSC after a brief illness. Mrs. McCutchen was born April 14, 1945, in Kingstree, a daughter of the late Franklin William and Florence Davis “Flop” Fairey. She was a graduate of Kingstree High School and Converse College. She taught school at Williamsburg Academy for over 30 years and worked at Colonial Rubber Works for 14 years. Shelby was an active member of Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, where she was the president of The Women of the Church, an Elder of the church, treasurer of the Presbyterian Women of New Harmony Presbytery, and the moderator of the Personnel Committee of New Harmony Presbytery. She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, the treasurer of The Williamsburg Academy Development Corp., and she taught computer classes and was a tutor at St. Ann’s Felician Center. In addition to her parents, Shelby was preceded in death by her brother Franklin William Fairey, Jr. Surviving, in addition to her husband of 47 years, David, of Kingstree, are: 2 sons, James D. “Jamie” (Tonya) McCutchen, Jr., of Greenville, and Stephen Brooks (Tammie) McCutchen, of Kingstree; and 5 grandchildren, Taylor, Ryan, Morgan, Marlee, and Kelby Gunnar McCutchen A memorial service will be held at 1 PM Tuesday, November 4, 2014, in Williamsburg Presbyterian Church.
