Sharon Johnson “Sheri” Hughes passed away peacefully on Tuesday July 6, 2021 at her home. Mrs. Hughes was born September 9, 1950, in Kingstree, SC, a daughter of the late Paul Robert and Lena Arnette Johnson. Sheri served as a schoolteacher for many years at Andrews Elementary, Williamsburg Academy, and other schools. Until 2007, when her husband Steve retired from the ministry, Sheri’s unofficial second job was being a preacher’s wife and attending church services, events and social gatherings. Sheri loved the churches Steve ministered to and the numerous friendships she had in the congregations. Sheri loved an adventure, traveling to Australia, Italy, Brazil, New York, Texas, California, Las Vegas, Colorado, the Caribbean islands, and many other places with her family and friends. She enjoyed Broadway musicals, whether performed in New York City or by the local theater in Conway. Sheri personified the cliche, “never met a stranger,” as she formed friendships that lasted with people from all across the globe. She was truly a People’s Person, and you could expect her to strike up a conversation with the table beside her in a restaurant or a young family at the playground!
Sheri loved to play games with her family and friends. She enjoyed Uno, Canasta, Gin Rummy, Hand and Foot and Bridge. Sheri was also excellent at crossword puzzles, and she played Scrabble long before Words with Friends was a thing – though she played that too. The beach was her favorite place in the world, and she was quick to get down and play in the sand or on the putt putt course with her children and later her grandchildren. Sheri squeezed every ounce of happiness out of her life, as she would often cut phone calls short with her patented “well, I’m going to let you go.” There was never silence with Sheri; if it got quiet, you could hear her humming whatever tune was in her head. In her last year, she was cared for by her fiancé, her family, and her vast array of friends with visitors in and out daily. Surviving Sheri are her daughter, Kayce Halstead (Clay), of Mt. Pleasant, four sons Cory Hughes (Ginny),of Greenville, Joel Hughes (Allison), Joshua Hughes, and Caleb Hughes, all of Columbia, seven grandchildren, Henry, Elgin, Hasel, Cohen, Holland, Lena and Hugh, sisters Laura Floyd (Bruce) and Robin Norcia (Mike), nephews Wells Floyd and Michael Norcia, Niece Amanda Norcia, and her fiancé, Ray Temple. Her death was preceded by her Husband, William Steve Hughes. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, July 9, 2021, at Kingstree United Methodist Church, with a burial in Kingstree Memorial Gardens. Sheri’s family will receive friends on Thursday, July 8, 2021, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Williamsburg Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sheri’s memory to Belin United Methodist Church PO Box 528 Murrells Inlet, SC 29576 or the Ernest F. Hollings Cancer Center at MUSC, 18 Bee Street MSC 450, 29425

So sorry. Shari was a friendly loving person. I first met her at bridge and later would see her at church. I know you will miss her so much.
Sherry was a wonderful person that I dearly loved. She is with her Lord and Steve now.
Sheri and I were childhood friends and attended High School together.
We both enjoyed growing up in Kingstree and all that a small town provided for us. Her positive outlook about life will be missed by many but also remembered for its true blessings.
Our sincere condolences to Sheri’s family. She was a wonderful person and I’m so glad we got to know her.
What a great legacy Sheri and Steve produced during their life.
They impacted many as servants of our Lord.

Sheri was a beautiful person, inside and out. I knew her as a teenager and I knew her dad, Mr. Bob. I know that she is at peace with Steve in heaven now and I look forward to seeing them again one day. I hope that the children and grandchildren find peace in this as well.
An old friend, see you again.
We are thinking of all of you with much, much love.

Steve, I am so sorry and saddened to hear of your sons passing. My thoughts and payers are with you and your family.
An extremely nice friendly lady who my wife and I (in Australia) really got along very well with. It was an honour to have called Sheri our friend. We enjoyed many hours of laughter when Sheri and Kayce visited and stayed in our home some years ago. This is a FRIENDSHIP which has run the test of time for more than 20 years and came about by the two of us playing online card games.
Sheri and her family are very much respected by my wife, Jenny, and myself. Sheri is now at Rest with her husband Steve who we met when we visited Myrtle Beach. May Sheri Rest In Peace.
