Stanley Newell Brown (aka Bony), 84, of Wilmington, NC passed away on Sunday, April 30th , 2023 at Trident Hospital in North Charleston, SC. He was born August 23rd , 1938 in Cedar Swamp, SC. Stanley grew up in Cedar Swamp, SC near Kingstree. He loved baseball and pitched for the Kingstree High School Boll Weevils until he graduated in 1956. He lovingly coached little league baseball for years. After high school, he got married and started a family. He loved being a father to his three children, whom he loved unconditionally, and was happy to be a father figure to several others. He devoted most of his life to his children, working hard to make sure his family had the best. He was very proud of his kids and grandkids and taught them there was nothing they couldn’t do or be if they set their mind to it. He was playful and loved to laugh, be silly, and play practical jokes. He passed his great sense of humor on to his children.

Stanley was loving, caring, and always willing to help others, though he didn’t really like people to know this about him. He was 100% “a Brown” through and through. He was stubborn as a mule, didn’t like anyone to tell him what to do, and was quite opinionated. He had no problem speaking his mind to anyone. Being “a Brown”, he was certain he was right. These traits were lovingly passed down through genetics and environment to his children and grandchildren (some worse than others), much to the chagrin of parents and spouses alike. He was proud of where he came from and taught his children to be proud of their ancestors and their heritage. He taught them they had value and to stand up for themselves, what they believed in, and the little guy. He loved babies, animals, country music, Pepsi Cola, and most importantly, (other than his children) his country. Stanley had his own cell in Facebook jail for telling the truth. And he was proud of his kids when they went to Facebook jail for telling the truth and they all have! He was a patriot and a loyal friend to many. He was one-of-a-kind and will be missed.

He is survived by his three children, Melanie Anne Brown DMD (Guy Miller), Jennie Brown Busteed (Tim Busteed MD), and Stanley Norwood Brown, along with his five grandchildren, Grayson Busteed, Katherine Busteed, Nolan Busteed, Dexter Brown, Beau Brown, his sister, Jenny Claire Brown McKenzie (Keith), and by his beloved dog, Cissy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Norwood M. Brown and Jennie Lee McClary Brown of Kingstree, SC and his sister, Sylvia Gail Brown Gray of Lake City, SC.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May the 6th at 2pm at Williamsburg Funeral Home in Kingstree, SC, officiated by Pastor Michael Fields.

He did adore his children. I saw the unconditional love he bestowed upon his family. He raised women who truly are Steel Magnolias in every sense. His children are living testiments of the values and strength Mr. Brown represented. I will miss his Facebook posts. I loved his plain truth approach to the events of these times.

  10. Meg Baines

Stanley and I became firm Facebook friends a number of years ago. We spent a good deal of time in fb jail together due to our coinciding political views. We regularly pulled the world apart and put it back together again. Through his wonderful photographs, memories shared and anecdotes, I developed a love for old Kingstree, having never even set foot there.
But, his greatest love, his passion, was for his family, of which he was fiercely proud.
Stanley had become a trusted friend, whose interactions I welcomed and looked forward to immensely.
With tears in my eyes, Stanley, I’m saying my farewell, all too soon. I will miss you, as will Martin. Rest in peace in the arms of our Lord, dear friend, until we all meet up.
Condolences, love and prayers from your friends in England to your treasured family.

  11. Anne Martin

I am so sorry for your loss. I remember Newell ( aka Stanley today) from high school, baseball and the prettiest eyes I ever saw. So glad he gave his children those wonderful “Brown” qualities and happy memories. Love to you all.
