Thomas Mauldin Brown, Jr., 67, founder of Brown’s Bar-B-Que, died Monday, January 11, 2021, in McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence, SC.
Mr. Brown was born August 14, 1953, in Kingstree, a son of the late Thomas Mauldin Brown and Azalee Dukes Brown. He was a graduate of Kingstree High School. In addition to owning the restaurant and catering business, Thomas also farmed, which he greatly enjoyed. He also enjoyed horseback riding and riding motorcycles, but the Bar-B-Que business was his dream come true. Thomas was a member of Kingstree First Baptist Church. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Surviving Mr. Brown are: his children, Thomas M. (Angie) Brown, III of Kingstree, Carla B. (Robbie) Smith of Turbeville, and Christopher D. (Mandy) Brown of Kingstree; grandchildren, Thomas M. Brown IV, Anna A. Brown, Alyssa L. Tedder, Brittany E. Tedder, Emma Grace Tedder, Lane Myers, Meggan E. Smith, Robert B. Smith, Jr., Abbigale J. Smith, Christopher D. Brown, Jr., Ozlon N. Brown, and James “Briley” Campbell; a great grandson, Nolan T. Brown; 2 sisters, Eunice B. (Steve) Beard of Columbia and Mary Alice Brown of Mount Pleasant; and a brother, Michael D. (Abigail) Brown of Cordesville.
Graveside services will be held 1 PM Thursday, January 14, 2021, in Kingstree Memorial Gardens. Please follow Covid precautions by socially distancing and wearing a mask.

So sorry to hear of Thomas’s passing. You are all in my thoughts and prayers during this extremely difficult time. It will be difficult to go to Brown’s and not see Thomas on his stool overseeing the daily business he loved so much.

So sorry to see this. We have lost one of the area’s greatest entrepreneurs. Who could ever forget Brown’s BBQ responsible for putting Kingstree on the map and in the hearts and minds of thousands if not millions of people. His legacy will live on carried by his heirs and his successful restaurant business. May God continue to bless his loving family. He will be missed.

Thomas was a true friend and boss after working at Brown BBQ for so many years I felt like part of the family they even give me the name Tony Brown working for Thomas was a blast because he was more like a friend than a boss if I ever needed everything or any of his employees he was always there we will miss you Thomas and remember speaking for all your employees we love you and we are surely miss you rest in peace

Thomas Brown is a true friend and boss man he was more than just a boss he was a man you can depend on when ever his employees needed him he was there. If you ever need a friend or boss. Just knock on heaven door. We will miss you Thomas we love you but God loves you best.

Thomas always had that little smile and friendly.I always made a trip to Brown’s for Bar B Que for my family and my Columbia friends when coming down to visit. My last visit was just before Christmas and Thomas was sitting watching tv,he turned and spoke with that smile. He will be missed
