My thoughts and condolences to Kathy. Fay and Ernest and your families. Billy was a great guy – and always looked up to. He was just a few years older but I remember him well as we played pick up baseball on the Palmetto League Field on summer days in Kingstree and particularly that he was always helpful and kind to younger guys – taking time to help them with the basics. I also remember his working with his Mom and Dad in Mr. William’s grocery. The world, along with our family as lost a kind and good man.
I met Bill at Emory, in 1951, where we both were members of the ATO fraternity. Bill’s family lived in Decatur, GA, on the Agnes Scott campus where his dad was professor of chemistry at the college. Bill and I became good friends and his mom, the gracious…and kind… Southern lady she was, would invite me to share a meal with the family. Those meals were welcomed reprieves and set me and other “brothers” up for home cooking in place of cafeteria delicacies. Being from south Florida, 650 miles was a trek to get home cooking. Mrs. Frierson to the rescue!
As is the case, all-too-often, friendships suffer from corporate moves and interest changes and that ever-present necessity of earning a living and raising and feeding families. Providence, however, grants us human-types the faculty of remembering, assuming, of course our “rememberer” hasn’t fled with other attributes as the birthdays keep coming and coming and coming….
I well-remember Bill. We all are often not fortunate enough to cross paths with and well-remember a Bill Frierson. A blessing, of sorts.
I well-remember WMF.
