Olive F. DeCaro
Georgetown

Olive Madge Frierson DeCaro, a Georgetown County resident for more than half a century, passed on Thursday, November 21, 2013, surrounded by her family. She was 90 years old. Born in Kingstree, SC in July 1923, Olive was the daughter of John Samuel and Clennie Haselden Frierson, and one of eleven Frierson siblings. She was the wife of Georgetown merchant and shoemaker Salvatore DeCaro (d. 1975), the founding owner of Sal’s Repair and Boot Shop. She was the mother of four, Mary DeCaro “Cookie” Harvey, Dr. Thomas Joseph DeCaro, Frances DeCaro Briley, and Daniel Salvatore DeCaro.
Raised in Williamsburg County on a family farm, as a young woman in the early 1940s, Olive and her sister, “Boots,” left home to work at a defense plant in Georgia in support of the war effort. There she met and married her husband, Sal, a New York native and Staff Sergeant in the Army Air Corps. After the war, the couple returned to Sal’s home in New York to raise their family. The family remained in New York until the late 1950s, when they moved to Laurens and then Andrews, SC, eventually settling in Georgetown County.
Olive was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, neighbor, and friend, and well-known for her kindness, generosity, and considerable skills as a cook, baker, and gardener. She is survived by three of her seven sisters, Nell Frierson Altman, Sue Frierson Easler, and Betty Frierson Dawkins, as well as her four adult children, twelve grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
The life of Olive DeCaro will be honored with a service on Friday, November 22, 2013 at 3:00PM at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, 84 Mount Vernon Road, Greeleyville, SC. The Reverend Charles B. Dawkins, brother-in-law of the deceased, of Lexington, SC will officiate. The family will receive guests at the Mount Vernon Fellowship Hall following the service and requests that memorials be made to Tidelands Community Hospice, 2591 N. Fraser Street, Georgetown, SC 29440.
