Jimmie Burgess Burrows, 90, died Wednesday, June 20, 2018, in Kingstree Nursing Facility.

Mrs. Burrows was born April 24, 1928, in Kingstree, a daughter of the late Lamar Wilkins Burgess and Jessie McElveen Burgess. She was a graduate of Kingstree High School and worked for Baxter Labs and Talon Manufacturing Company. Jimmie was a member of Williamsburg Presbyterian Church and the Hut Bible class.

Surviving Mrs. Burrows are: her children, Debbie Johnson, of Kingstree and Richard G. “Ricky” (Jane) Burrows, of Kingstree; 3 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. In addition to her former husband R. G. “Gibson” Burrows, Jimmie was preceded in death by a grandson, Greg Burrows; brothers, William Burgess, Rodney Burgess, Leslie “Pee Wee” Burgess, Jack Burgess and Roland Burgess, and one sister, Ethel Coker.

Annette Dukes Kirby, 80, widow of James “Jimmy” W. Kirby, of Kingstree, passed away on June 16, 2018 surrounded by her family after a brief illness.

Daughter of the late Ila McCants Dukes and Doris Evans Dukes, Annette was born on May 20, 1938 in Greeleyville. She is survived by her two sons, Jay (Catherine) Kirby, of Kingstree and Craig (Elizabeth) Kirby, of Columbia; her grandchildren; Tripp Kirby, of Winston-Salem, N.C., Tyler Kirby, of Boone, N.C., Taylor Kirby, of Kingstree, and Allen Kirby and Andrew Kirby, of Columbia; her sister, Margaret Shirlaw, of Florence, her brother, Bobby Dukes, of Kingstree, sister-in-law, Carolyn Dukes, of Columbia, brothers-in-law Keith Phillips, of Columbia and Jim Easler of Columbia. In addition to her husband Jimmy, she was preceded in death by her sisters Dorethea Phillips and Will Easler, and brother Heyward Dukes.

Annette retired after 38 years of service at Williamsburg First National Bank. She was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church in Greeleyville and attended First Baptist Church of Kingstree.

Annette’s deep love for her family was evident in everything that she did. She built a strong legacy of family and love during her 55 years of marriage to Jimmy Kirby. She treasured time with her family, enjoyed countless hours on the beach, faithfully followed University of South Carolina sports, and often gathered everyone together in her home with her cheerful heart and patient spirit. She was well known by many for her macaroni and cheese, sweet tea, peach cobbler, pound cake, and boiled peanuts. She always had something delicious prepared to share at any family gathering, tailgate, or holiday. Her cheerful and welcoming heart will be missed by many.

A graveside memorial service celebrating Peggy’s life will be held at 11AM on Saturday, June 23, 2018 in Kingstree Memorial Gardens.

Peggy Epps Boatwright, 67, widow of Ray Boatwright, died Friday, June 15, 2018, in Trident Hospital in Charleston.

Mrs. Boatwright was born October 13, 1950, in Kingstree, a daughter of Margaret Tanner Epps and the late C.W. Epps. She was a graduate of Kingstree High School and Betty Stevens Cosmetology School. Peggy was a beautician and a member of Kingstree First Baptist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Boatwright, in addition to her mother of Bonneau, SC are: her two sons, Lance Boatwright and Curt (Kelly) Boatwright, both of Kingstree; her brother, Charles Epps, of Bonneau; a sister, Donna E. Love, of Kingstree; and four grandchildren. In addition to her father and husband, Peggy was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Tisdale.

Earl Wesley McCutchen, 75, died peacefully at home Monday, June 11, 2018, after a long illness.

Mr. McCutchen was born December 22, 1942, in Kingstree, a son of the late Thomas Dewitt McCutchen and Emma Louise Britton McCutchen. He was a 1961 graduate of Kingstree High School and received a Bachelor of Political Science degree from Francis Marion College. Earl was a veteran of the US Air Force and was last employed at Gold Kist in Kingstree. He enjoyed gardening, especially hybridizing daylilies.

Surviving Mr. McCutchen are: his three daughters, Melanie McCutchen, of Kingstree, Brittany M. Powell, of Cades, and Tonya McElveen, of Turbeville; six grandchildren, Cameron and Sophie McCutchen,  Bellamy Powell, Jessica Floyd, Tyler and Hannah McElveen; one great grandchild, Ava Tate Floyd; 2 brothers, Joe McCutchen, of Pensacola, FL and Wayne McCutchen, of Kingstree; two sisters, Bessie Lowder, of Oswego and Mary Fulton, of Georgetown; special friends, Charles and Heidi Douglas; and special niece and nephew, Linda Harris and Gary McCutchen. In addition to his parents, Earl was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas and Ernest McCutchen.

Evelyn Dennis Gaskins, wife of William A. “Buddy” Gaskins, died Sunday, June 10, 2018, in Carolinas Hospital in Florence, SC.

Mrs. Gaskins was born March 31, 1938, in Kingstree, SC, a daughter of the late French Dennis and Hattie Thames Dennis. She was a graduate of Kingstree High School and was the bookkeeper for Jarrett’s Specialty Company for 23 years. Mrs. Gaskins was an accomplished poet with 4 books of poetry published. She was a member of Old Fort Baptist Church in Summerville, SC.

Surviving Mrs. Gaskins, in addition to her husband Buddy, of Coward, are: her grandchildren, Joseph Patterson and Steven Horne; and her great grandchildren, Christopher and Jennifer Patterson. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gaskins was preceded in death by her son, Ricky Weatherford, brothers, Ted and Jack Dennis, and sisters, Annie Mae McCants and Addie Bell Thigpen.

Covington Ellison Thompson, Jr., 71, husband of Chelsie Anne Gamble Thompson, died peacefully at home Sunday, June 10, 2018, after a long illness.

Mr. Thompson was born January 25, 1947, in Florence, SC, a son of the late Covington Ellison Thompson and Miriam Elizabeth Morris Thompson. Mr. Thompson joined the Air Force at the age of 17, served in the SC National Guard, and retired from the US Army as a Major. He attended Clemson University and was employed over the years as an auto mechanic, a teacher, a special agent for the Army CID, and a race car driver. He enjoyed building car motors, especially race car engines, computers, and anything mechanical.

Surviving Mr. Thompson, in addition to his wife of 37 years, are: his 3 children, Beth (Tony) Martin and Henry Thompson, both of Lexington, SC and Tom (Anne) Thompson, of Kingstree; grandchildren, Matthew, Mabry, and Miles Martin, Bailey and Walker Thompson, and John Thomas Thompson, Jr. and Salley Thompson; niece, Coker (Alex) Gamble Powell; nephew, Frank Gamble; sister-in-law, Sarah Gamble; and great niece, Sadie Powell. In addition to his parents, Mr. Thompson was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Dr. Homer F. Gamble.

Barbara Patricia “Patsy” Jones Caulder, 74, widow of James E. Caulder, Jr., died Monday, June 4, 2018, at her residence in Kingstree.

Mrs. Caulder was born December 12, 1943, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late John Richard Jones and Anna Lee Strong Jones. She was a graduate of Kingstree High School and was a cosmetologist. Mrs. Patsy was a member of Kingstree First Baptist Church and the Rainbow Sunday School Class. She loved gardening, her church and her family.

Surviving Mrs. Caulder, are: 2 daughters, Denise (Hugh) Stephens, of Richmond Hill, GA and Heidi (Ganesha) Perera, of Augusta, GA; 6 grandchildren, Emerson Stephens, Tradd Stephens, Sanders Stephens, Conrad Perera, Evan Perera and Ella Perera; 5 sisters, Louise Schartel, of Charleston, Judy McCutchen, of Kingstree, Annette Pinson and Dot Doherty, both of Charleston, Linda Hupp, of Kingstree, and a sister-in-law, Harriette Cannon of Turbeville.

Edwin Carroll Brockington, 78, husband of Eulila Matthews Brockington, died Monday, May 28, 2018, in Carolinas Hospital in Florence, SC.

Mr. Brockington was born February 27, 1940, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Karl Alexander Brockington and O’Dell Elizabeth Courtney Brockington. He was a graduate of Kingstree High School was a route salesman and an office manager for Pepsi Cola for 40 years. Mr. Brockington was an avid outdoorsman, a farmer, and loved to cook. He was a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church where he taught Sunday school, was a deacon, a choir member, and a member of the Church Brotherhood.

Surviving Mr. Brockington, in addition to his wife Eulila, of the home, are: 2 daughters, Brenda (Rusty) Dorrell, of Kingstree and Melinda (Brian) Goings, of Blythewood, SC; a brother, Wayne (Irma) Brockington, of Kingstree; 4 grandchildren, Dustin Dorrell, Wesley (Katie) Dorrell, Jordan Goings, and Dani Goings. In addition to his parents, Mr. Brockington was preceded in death by brothers, Gene Brockington and Karl Brockington, Jr.

Herbert Benjamin Smith, Jr., 93, husband of Nora Woodberry Powell Smith, passed away at home after a long illness on Monday, May 28, 2018.

Mr. Smith was born August 12, 1924, in Pierson, FL, a son of the late Herbert Benjamin Smith and Eulee Kirby Smith. He was a veteran of the US Army, was a farmer, and retired from Albany International after 26 years. He was a dedicated member of the Gideons International and an active member of the Assembly of God Church in Kingstree.

Surviving Mr. Smith, in addition to his wife Nora, of the home, are: his children, Karen Smith (Clyde) Stewart, Glenda Smith (Greg) Webb, and H. Benjamin (Nancy) Smith, III; stepchildren, Malinda P. (Howard) Threatt, Johnnie Sue (Doug) Hartman, and Randy (Debbie) Powell; grandchildren, April (Taylor) Phillips, Tara Webb, Jenna Webb, Jack Smith, and Sam Smith; 7 step grandchildren; 18 step great grandchildren; 6 sisters, Catherine Duke, Dell Prosser, Brooks Jackson, Janie Knight, Nita Yarborough, and Linda Williamson; a brother Ariail Smith; and a daughter in law, Pam Powell.  Mr. Smith’s family would like to send a special thank you to caregivers, Lou Brown and Avis Cooper for their loving care and kindness.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his first wife, Geneva Knight Smith, brothers, Reynolds and Dannie Smith, a sister, Rounette Belue, and a step son Raymond Powell,  a special aunt and uncle, Herb and Bertha Sepiel.

 Linda Floyd McGee, 66, died Sunday, May 27, 2018, peacefully in her sleep.

Linda was born May 15, 1952, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Cora Mae and Samuel Andrew “S.A.” Floyd. She was a store clerk and loved her son and nieces and nephews.

Surviving Mrs. McGee are: her son, Daniel (Kelly) McGee; step-children, Michelle (Dempsey) Sharpe, Tammy (Ray) McKenzie; grandchildren, Allie and Brantley Sharpe, Shawn and Tommy Welch; great grandchildren, Hailey, Karson, Ryder and Reel; brothers, David Floyd and Alpha Floyd; a sister, Mary Floyd, and 15 nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Linda was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Floyd.

On Saturday, May 26, 2018, Eula Floyd Winters went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was born on July 20, 1927 in Birmingham, Alabama and resided in the Cedar Swamp Community. After her marriage to Lejune Floyd, she made Sandy Bay her home. Eula was a Sunday school teacher for many years at the Sandy Bay Pentecostal Holiness Church, and will be remembered for the many lives she impacted with her teachings and prayers.

Mrs. Winters was predeceased by: her husband; her father, Namon J. Crosby; her mother, Eula McCullough Crosby; and two brothers, Joe and Jack Crosby.

Surviving are: her children, Victoria (Ken) Wooten, Pat (Julie) Floyd, Linda Price, and Johnny (Janet) Floyd; 8 grandchildren, Ginger Webber, Patti (Steve) Wilbourne, Becky Price, Bill (Tracy) Price, Christopher (Jessie) Floyd, Gregory Wooten, Jonathan (Ashley) Wooten and Tyler Floyd. She is also survived by 10 great grandchildren.

James Cantey “Jim” Wise, Jr., 80, husband of Ruth Matthews Wise, died peacefully at home Thursday, May 10, 2018, after a long illness.

Mr. Wise was born May 19, 1937, in Johnston, SC, a son of the late James Cantey Wise, Sr. and Harriett Toney Wise. He was a graduate of Johnston High School and attended Clemson University where he played baseball. During his career he worked in industry as plant managers and directors. He last served as the beginning Director of Williamsburg Water and Sewer Authority. He also enjoyed Little League baseball and was the Voice of Stallion football for fifteen years. Jim was presently serving on the Board of Zoning Appeal for the Town of Kingstree. He was a member of Williamsburg Presbyterian Church where he had served as a deacon and elder. Jim especially cherished his work with Williamsburg Cares and was very dedicated to its cause.

Surviving Mr. Wise, in addition to his wife Ruth, of the home, are: one brother, Lane (June) Wise, of Johnston, SC; two daughters, Faith (Mike) Gibson and Toney (Eric) Hernandez, both of Lexington, SC; three sons, Dickie (Susan) Wise, of Edgefield, SC, Vernon (Lee) Wise, of Copperas Cove, TX, and Matt (Claire) Wise, of Kingstree, SC; two stepsons and their families; 14 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Jack Bradford Roberts, Sr., 80, widower of Sylvia Clark Roberts, died Thursday, May 10, 2018, in Williamsburg Regional Hospital after a long illness.

Mr. Roberts was born July 17, 1937, in Charleston, SC, a son of the late Richard and Eunice Louise Barnette Roberts. He was a graduate of St. Stephen High School and worked at Longlands Plantation as a supervisor for about 40 years. Jack loved hunting, fishing, cutting grass, visiting at Cooper’s Country Store, and spending time with family.

Surviving Mr. Roberts are: 2 daughters, Phyllis “Toodles” (Kevin) Wilson and Faye (Chuck) Shealy; a son, Brad (Shirley) Roberts; 7 grandchildren, Iva Grace Wilson, Kate Wilson, Reed Lane, Nichole Collins, Jamie Baker, Christy Simmons, and Renee Bowles; 6 great grandchildren; and a sister, Jane Roberts. In addition to his wife and his parents, Jack was preceded in death by 2 daughters, Julie T. Edgar and Cathy T. Smerchek, and a sister, Thelma R. Flanigan.

Pearline Parker Tisdale, 75, widow of John Edward “J.E.” Tisdale, Sr., died Wednesday, May 9, 2018, in Carolina’s Hospital System in Florence.

Pearline was born December 11, 1942, in Clarendon County, a daughter of the late Woodrow W. Parker and Luestia Parker Parker. She was an inspector for a clothing manufacturing company and a member of Floyd’s Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church. Pearline enjoyed coloring and reading her Bible.

Surviving Mrs. Tisdale are: her daughter, Vicky Woodard, of Griffin, GA; two sisters, Dianne  Parker, of Lake City and Millie Nettles, of Hemingway; two brothers, Sammy Parker and David Parker, both of Lake City; grandchildren, Jennifer, Justin, Catherine, Douglas, Dustin and John; five great grandchildren, and a special nephew, Coot Parker. In addition to her parents and her husband, Pearline was preceded in death by a son, Johnny Tisdale, a daughter Debbie Daniels, two sisters, Gertrude Bryant and Jennie Parker; and a brother, Cecil Parker.

Lurleese was born May 9, 1926, in Lake City, a daughter of the late Henry Feagin and Mettie McKenzie. She was a homemaker and a member of Kingstree Church of God.

Surviving Mrs. Floyd are: her daughter, Paulette (Hubert) McClary, of Kingstree; two grandsons, Gregg (Jessica) McClary and Glenn (Tina) McClary; four great grandchildren, Peyton McClary, Hunter McClary, Joshua Stone and Candace McClary. In addition to her parents and her husband, Lurleese was preceded in death by her children, Linda and Cecil Floyd; a sister, Edna Browder; and three brothers, Leo Feagin, Cleve Feagin and James Feagin.

Grace Brown Tisdale, 94, widow of Melvin Tisdale, died Thursday, April 26, 2018, in the Kingstree Nursing Facility after a long illness.

Mrs. Tisdale was born June 14, 1923, in Greenville County, a daughter of the late William Irvin and Lula Shelton Brown. She and her twin sister, Hazel B. Epps, were raised at Connie Maxwell Children’s Home. Mrs. Tisdale received a BA Degree from Lander College and moved to Kingstree where she married her husband of 55 years. During her 35 year teaching career Mrs. Tisdale taught Home Economics, Physical Education, and Science as well as coaching basketball and sponsoring several clubs. She enjoyed playing golf, softball, basketball, walking, and sewing. Mrs. Tisdale was a faithful member of Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, and the Ladies Sewing Club.

Surviving Mrs. Tisdale are: her twin sister, Hazel B. Epps, of Kingstree; sister-in-law, Kay Brown, of Greenville; and several nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and her husband Melvin, she was preceded in death by brothers, Ralph, Ed, Lenard, and Harold Brown as well as sisters, Ruth Story and Willie Mae Phillips.

Graveside funeral services will be 2 PM Saturday, April 28, 2018, in Tisdale Cemetery, 615 Cemetery Road, Kingstree, SC 29556. Her family will greet friends in the cemetery following the service.

Sarah Wynn Scott Timmons, 77, widow Edward Carlile Timmons, died Monday, April 23, 2018, at her residence in Kingstree.

Sarah was born September 5, 1940, in Kingstree, a daughter of the late James William Scott and M.E. Parrott. She worked as a cosmetologist and loved baking. Sarah was an active member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, where she was involved in the Kizzie Scott Circle. She loved her children, siblings and her grandchildren.

Surviving Sarah are: her children, Edward (Kelly) Timmons, Johnny (Suzette) Timmons, Elizabeth Stevenson and Jacob (Sam) Timmons; her brothers, Jimmy (Katherine)  Scott and Billy (Lynn) Scott; her sister Elaine (David) McCracken and her twin sister Harriett Welch; 7 grandchildren, Alex, Caitlin, Carlile, Hunter, Sarah, Sloan and Will; and 2 great grandchildren, Abigail and Skylar.

David Scott Timmons, 81, husband of Loretta Smith Timmons, died Monday, April 16, 2018, at Carolina’s Hospital System in Florence.

David was born June 22, 1936, in Kingstree, a son of the late David Benjamin Timmons and Katherine Scott Timmons. He was a veteran of the US Marine Corps and retired from Southeastern Waterproofing Company. After retirement, David was a driver for Longstreet Chevrolet. He enjoyed camping, gardening and loved playing with his great-grandchildren. David was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.

Barry Miller Dorrell, 64, died Thursday, April 12, 2018, at Carolina’s Hospital System in Florence.

Barry was born February 9, 1954, in Kingstree, SC, a son of the late William Roland Dorrell and Frankie Thelma Parrott. He worked at Colonial Rubber and was a big supporter of Kingstree High School’s football team. Barry enjoyed carpentry, cooking, gardening and was an avid Clemson fan.

Surviving Barry are: Kathy Dorrell, of Kingstree; his children, Joseph (Heather) Dorrell, of Wisconsin; Phillip (Marisor) Dorrell, of Maryland; Emily (Michael) Blocker, of Greenville; and Billy (Amber) Dorrell, of Rock Hill; his grandchildren; Madeline, Nathaniel, Benjamin and Matthew, of Maryland; Ryan, Mya, Cori and Tori, of Greenville; Will, Susannah and Sam, of Rock Hill; his brothers, Jack Dorrell, of Kingstree and Larry Dorrell, of Tennessee.

Ales Moore Conyers, 64, widow of George Conyers, died Wednesday, April 4, 2018, at her son’s residence in Kingstree.

Mrs. Ales was born May 17, 1953, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Willie and Jessie Micheau Moore. She was a graduate of Williamsburg High School and was a Sergeant in the Air Force. Ales worked for Joe Powell House Movers for 20 years. She was a Charter Member of Kingstree Church of God of Prophecy and was a faithful church member. She loved animals and was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother, sister, mother-in-law and friend. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Heyward “Buck” Moore and Rhett Moore and her sisters, Maybelle Thomas and Irene Jolly.

Surviving are: her son, Trad (Krissy) Conyers, of Kingstree; brothers, Jimmy Moore and Kenneth “BoBo” (Linda Sue) Moore, all of Kingstree; sisters, Hilda (Donnie) Kirby, of Lake City, and Mary (Grady) Tisdale, of Kingstree; 3 grandchildren, Enza, Layne and NcKenna Conyers; and several nieces and nephews.
