Mrs. Olga Perry Mims Cox, 93, passed away Saturday, August 30, 2014, in Tidelands Hospice House in Georgetown.

     Mrs. Cox was born March 19, 1921, in Hemingway, a daughter of the late Davis Sylvester Perry and Janie Sanders Perry. She was a graduate of Muddy Creek High School. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Oliver William Bruorton, Robert Lavern Mims, and E.J. Cox; 2 sisters, Clarice Newsome and Lib Graham; and her brother Phillip Perry. Mrs. Cox was a loving Christian wife, mother, and caregiver to parents and siblings, and enjoyed her family and friends and witnessing to those about the Lord. She was an ordained minister. Mrs. Cox’s family gives special thanks to Tidelands Hospice and their staff at the Hospice House for their loving care.

     Surviving are: her children, Oliver “Billy” (Gloria) Bruorton, of Greeleyville, Janet Mims Bennett, of Conway, and LaRease “Ree” (Frankie) Mims, of Eastover; grandchildren, Mike (Beverly) Bruorton, of Homerville, GA, Dena (Duane) Flinchum, of Greeleyville, Cami (David) Ebert, of Franklin, TN, Chris (Amanda) Fleming, of Strasburg, VA, Blake (Margaret) Mims, of Isle of Palms, and Holly (Perry) Jameson, of John’s Island; great grandchildren, Davis, Meagan, & Mary Mikelyn Bruorton, Josh (Michaela) Taylor, Glorianna Flinchum, David, Josh, & Caleb Ebert, Morgan Fleming, Luke, Haley, Reese Mims, and Blakely Lane Jameson; special nieces and nephews; and beloved caregiver Ruby Dorsey.

     Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Monday, September 1, 2014, in Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church, with burial in the church cemetery. Funeral services for Robert Gary “Bobby” Tisdale, 87, will be held at 11 AM Friday August 29, 2014, at Central Presbyterian Church, 5001 Thurgood Marshall Highway in Kingstree, SC, with Rev. Craig Pipkin and Rev. John Dodd officiating. Burial will follow in Tisdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6 to 8 PM at Williamsburg Funeral Home in Kingstree, SC

Bobby was born in Kingstree on August 2, 1927, a son of the late Gary and Edna McCrea Tisdale. He was a member of Central Presbyterian Church, where he had served as a deacon and an elder. Bobby served in the Navy and was deployed on the USS Wisconsin during his time in the service. He was a farmer and loved his farm and farming. One of his greatest joys was spending time at his cabin on Black River with his family.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Dorothy Marshall “Dot” Tisdale; daughter, Bonnie (Chuck) Schmidt, of Williston, SC; son, Michael (Janet) Tisdale, of Andrews; daughter, Linda (Duffy) McDonald, of Durham, NC; son, Wayne (Penny) Tisdale, of Anderson, SC; and daughter, Paulette Tisdale, of Anderson; grandchildren, Robbie Williams, Jennifer Williams, Heather Tisdale, Michele Johnson, Elliot McDonald, Ben McDonald, Kyle Tisdale, Ethan Tisdale, Drew Rawl, & Colleen Rawl; and 3 great grandchildren, Courtney Williams, Emmett Johnson & Marshall Johnson.

Bobby was preceded in death by his brother Ray Tisdale and his sisters, Elizabeth Sheegog, Emma Gene Holiway and Rose Nell Bifano.

Daniel Edward Timmons, Jr., 53, passed away Tuesday, August 19, 2014, at his home in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Mr. Timmons was born August 13, 1961, in Kingstree, a son of Mona Lee Scott Timmons and the late Daniel Edward Timmons, Sr. He was a graduate of Kingstree High School and Coastal Carolina University, and was a Navy veteran of Desert Storm.

Surviving are: his mother, Mona Lee Scott Timmons, of Kingstree; his son, Christopher D. Timmons, of Myrtle Beach; 2 sisters, Donna Seeger, of Kingstree and Debbie Moore, of Plainville, MA; a brother, Derrick Timmons, of Kingstree, and a half-brother, Louie Timmons, of Kingstree.

A graveside memorial service will be held 10 AM Saturday, August 30, 2014, in Kingstree Memorial Gardens in Kingstree.

Willard Dye (W.D.) Evans, Sr., 85, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2014, after a prolonged illness. He was born on July 11, 1929, in Kingstree, SC to John Workman Evans, Sr. and Trent Dye Evans.
W.D. grew up in Kingstree, South Carolina. He graduated from Kingstree High School in 1946. He then graduated from Clemson College in Clemson, SC where he received a B.S. in agronomy. W.D. Evans served during the Korean War with the Regimental Tank Company, 279th Infantry, 45th Division in 1952, where he was a first lieutenant and tank commander, and he received a Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, a United Nations Service Medal, and a Bronze Star Medal. Upon his return, W.D. worked in the roofing business with his father.  In 1965, he expanded by forming one of the first clear liquid fertilizer plants in SC in 1965. In 1977, it became W.D. Evans and Son and was operated by W.D. and David Evans until 2000. W.D Evans was a charter member of the Kingstree Men’s Prayer Breakfast founded in December, 1990. Over 25 years of existence, thousands of prayer cards were sent by W.D. and Kathleen on behalf of the group to recognize those who were being remembered in prayer.
W.D. married Ida Kathleen Barker in 1954 in Lumberton, NC. They were happily married for 60 years. W.D. was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. W.D.’s passions included hunting, cooking, and yard sale treasure hunts. W.D. was a deacon at Williamsburg Presbyterian Church as well as a charter member of Kingstree Presbyterian Church.
W.D. is survived by his spouse, Kathleen; his son, David Barker (Stephanie) Evans; his brother, John Workman Evans, Jr.; his grandchildren, David Hunter Evans and Hanna Kathleen Evans, all of Kingstree, SC; and a host of family and friends who will treasure his memory.
W.D. was preceded in death by his parents, John Workman Evans, Sr. and Trent Dye Evans,  as well as his son, Willard Dye “Dee” Evans, Jr.
A visitation will be held at Kingstree Presbyterian Church on Friday, August 15, 2014. The family will be greeting friends and relatives in the Fellowship Hall at the church from 6-8 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Kingstree Presbyterian Church, 229 Sumter Highway, Kingstree, SC at 2 p.m., Saturday, August 16, 2014. Burial will follow the funeral at Kingstree Memorial Gardens, Kingstree, SC.

Eva Stack Shirer, widow of Francis M. Shirer Sr., died Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at Methodist Manor of the Pee Dee in Florence.

Mrs. Shirer was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and educator. She was born May 11, 1912, in Pinewood, SC, one of eleven children of Adolphus Stack and Maud Griffin Stack. She attended the public schools of Pinewood, and graduated from Columbia College in 1933. She married Francis Shirer on Dec. 23, 1942.

She taught in the schools of Turkey Creek, Lane, St. Stephen, Lancaster and Dillon, working many years at Williamsburg Elementary and ending her decades-long career at Andrews Christian School.

She was active in Lane Methodist Church as a Sunday school teacher, and president of the women’s circle. She was an accomplished baker, and enjoyed rose and vegetable gardening with her husband.

In her years as a resident of Methodist Manor, she enjoyed playing cards with her friends.

She is survived by two sisters, Jennie Willis of North Augusta, and Sadie Richardson of Sumter, a son, Francis M. Shirer Jr. of Lexington, a daughter, Margaret Cox of Florence, two grandchildren, Elizabeth Cox of Durham, NC, and Russell Cox of Hartsville, and a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at Lane United Methodist Church, 33 Ravenel Avenue, Lane, SC, at 11 am on Friday, August 1, 2014, followed by interment at New Market Cemetery, Highway 375, Greeleyville, SC. The family will greet friends at 10:15 until the hour of the service at the church and then again following the committal service at the cemetery. Christopher Gadsden “Chris” Carsten, Jr., 72, husband of Jayne Deal Carsten, died Sunday, July 27, 2014, in McLeod Hospice House in Florence, SC.
Mr. Carsten was born May 13, 1942, in Kingstree, a son of the late C.G. Carsten, Sr. and Martha Arnette Carsten. He was a graduate of Kingstree High School, attended North Greenville College, and graduated from N.C. State with a degree in Agriculture. Chris always loved the land and his life as a farmer. He was a loving father, grandfather and a generous friend, and was a faithful and active member of Cades United Methodist Church.  In addition to his parents, Chris was preceded in death by his first wife, Joy Allen Carsten.
Survivors, in addition to his wife Jayne, of Cades, are: 2 sons, Dr. Christopher (Angie) Carsten, of Greenville, SC and Will (Mayme) Carsten, of Cades; a daughter, Kay Carsten (Stuart) Thomas, of Westerville, OH; grandchildren, Topper, Taylor, and Victoria Carsten, Ashley and Anna Mann, Joy, Kate, and Allen Carsten, and Ansley, Meg, and Hogan Thomas; 2 sisters, Bobby Jean (Tommy) Osmer, of Lexington, SC and his twin, Cynthia (Ross) McMillan, of Allendale, SC.
Funeral services will be held 10 AM Wednesday, July 30, 2014, in Cades United Methodist Church, with burial to follow in Sauls Carsten Cemetery. Mrs. Ruth Jeanette Cannon Smith, 80, widow of Sam David Smith, Jr., died Friday, July 25, 2014 at her daughter’s residence after an illness.
      

 Mrs. Smith was born February 23, 1934 in Williamsburg County, a daughter of William A. and Josephine Medlin Cannon.  She was a graduate of Kingstree High School and retired from Southern Bell as a telephone operator.  Mrs. Smith was a member of Bloomingvale Baptist Church. Special thanks to Roper Hospice Care of Charleston for their loving care of our Momma.
Surviving are, 3 daughters, Linda S. Driggers (Mackie) of Moncks Corner, Iris E. Smith-McGowan of Holly Hill, and Monica S. Bradley (Bob) of Pineville; 2 sisters, Lois C. Braxton of Alcolu and Brenda C. Driggers of Turbeville; 2 brothers, Harry Cannon of Salters and Wendell Cannon of St. Stephen; Brother-in-law Stark Smith of Kingstree, 5 grandchildren, David Driggers, Angela Driggers, Jason Bell, Lacy Bell, and Nikki McGowan; 4 great-grandchildren, Hunter Driggers, Caroline Driggers, Selah Bell, and Abby Jackson, and many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Francis, Steve, and Carl Cannon.

William Dorman Pridgen, 82, passed away on July 11, 2014. He was born in Little River, S. C. in 1932 to the late Robert Wilson and Isabel Stone Pridgen of Kingstree.

Mr. Pridgen graduated from Kingstree High School and the University of South Carolina Law School. He was known fondly as both “Bill” and “Billy”. Bill grew up in Kingstree and played baseball for USC. He was married to Mitsie Welch Pridgen, who predeceased him. Bill and Mitsie lived happily together for 52 years. Later, Bill was lucky enough to find and marry his college sweetheart, Ann Gilchrist Whitmire and they were happy together until Bill’s death.

After graduating from law school in 1955 Bill joined the Air Force. He trained in Texas, served in South Korea and had further assignments in Japan and the Philippines. Bill completed his service in 1957 as a 2^nd Lieutenant and returned to South Carolina. His civilian career included banking, teaching and many years practicing law. He enjoyed criminal defense work and was a proud member of the bar until his death.

Bill loved friends and family deeply and demonstrated this in both word and deed. This love of friends was especially true of his lifelong friendship with John (Gus) Montgomery of Kingstree. Bill’s devotion to family was solid and any need there surpassed all others. Of fatherhood he once wrote, “It is the duty and privilege of parenting to be concerned of every imagined shadow that may threaten”. However, it was Bill’s caretaking of Mitsie that became his testimony. After Mitsie developed Alzheimer’s, he took loving, single-handed care of her in their home for 15 years.

Bill was preceded in death by his sister Bobbie Pridgen Harley of Myrtle Beach. In addition to Ann, he is survived by his son, Will and daughter, Dargan. Will, of Rocky Face, GA, is married to Marla. Dargan, of Greeleyville, is married to Marty Easler. Bill has eight grandchildren, Isabel who is Will and Marla’s daughter, and Jim, Kathryn, Emma Rose, Harry, Mildred, Marti, and Billie, all of whom are Dargan and Marty’s children. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Wilson (Sonny) Pridgen, Jr. of Salem, SC and his wife Margaret and nephew Tommy Harley and family of Charleston and niece Sherrie Gore and family of Myrtle Beach.

Bill asked that his obituary end simply “teacher, lawyer, husband, and father”.

Mrs. Juanita Frederick “Nita” Tallevast, 86, passed away on Monday, July 7, 2014, in Kingstree Nursing Facility.

Mrs. Tallevast was born April 22, 1928, in Anderson, SC, a daughter of the late Clayton Maxwell Frederick and Ethel Bobo Frederick. She was a graduate of Anderson College, where she was currently a member of the Alumnae Board of Directors. Mrs. Tallevast retired after 25 years with SC Department of Social Services. She was a former member of Central Baptist Church, where she was a teacher for the Dorcas Sunday School Class, and New Prospect Baptist Church, both in Anderson. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Florence.

Surviving are: her daughters, Laura T. (Raymon) Cantley, of Nesmith and Cynthia Tallevast (Donnie), of Conway; grandchildren, Cullen Black, of Charlotte, Sarah C. Hoff, of Kingstree, and Ray Cantley, of Nesmith; great grandchildren, Jordan Black, Michelle and Katherine Ard, and William Julian Hoff. Mrs. Tallevast was preceded in death by a daughter Margaret Louise Tallevast.

Funeral services will be 1 PM Thursday, July 10, 2014, in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Anderson, SC.
