Jessie Dale Price McCollough, 85, wife of the late Samuel Edward “Ted” McCullough, died Sunday, September 25, 2022, at Williamsburg Regional Hospital in Kingstree.
Funeral services will be 11 AM, Thursday, September 29, 2022, at Williamsburg Presbyterian Church in Kingstree, with burial in Kingstree Memorial Gardens. Mrs. McCollough’s family will receive friends 5 to 7 PM Wednesday at Williamsburg Funeral Home.
Mrs. McCollough was born September 19, 1937, in Troy, SC, a daughter of the late William Burton Price and Mary Bernice Puckett Price. She was a graduate of Greenwood High School in Greenwood, SC. In 1959, she received a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education and Christian Education from Erskine College and did graduate work at USC and Columbia College.
Mrs. McCollough taught music in Kingstree public schools from 1959 to 1968. She was the organist at Williamsburg Presbyterian (USA) Church from 1959 to 1961 and the organist/choir director there from 1976 to 2010. “Miss Jessie Dale” taught piano to numerous local students over the years. She also taught music at Williamsburg Academy in Kingstree from 1999 to 2006. She left a lasting legacy with the numerous students she taught as many of these students not only remember the songs she taught them, but the tunes and words still come to them easily.
A lifelong Presbyterian, Mrs. McCollough’s “home church” was Troy Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in Troy, SC, where she first shared her gift of music by playing for church while attending the eighth grade in school. She was a member here until her marriage to Ted in 1962 when she joined Union Presbyterian Church and served as their organist until she joined Williamsburg Presbyterian Church and became their organist. At Williamsburg Presbyterian, she and Ted served as youth advisors from 1980 to 1987. Jessie retired from being organist there in 2010 but returned as their pianist for several years.
Daughters of the American Revolution was a big part of Jessie Dale’s life. She joined the Margaret Gregg Gordon Chapter in Kingstree on December 13, 1991, serving as regent for six terms, and reviving a dying chapter to an active chapter in that first term. She served as Vice Regent for three terms and was currently serving as Chapter Vice Regent. Mrs. McCollough’s service to DAR continued on to the state level, where she served as Scholarship Chairman from 2006 to 2009. During this time, South Carolina received its first National Scholarship. She was an Alternate for District VI from 2006 to 2009 and was chairman of decorations for the 2009 Spring Conference. She was District VI Director from 2009 to 2012 and chairman of Fall Forum 2011. Jessie was the pianist for Founder’s Day and Awards Day at Tamassee as well as the pianist for the Patriotic Luncheon, Continental Congress, in Washington, DC. She served as the State Historian from 2013 to 2015, the American History Chairman from 2015 to 2018, and the Music Chairman from 2019 to 2021. In 2020, she became an associate member of the Elizabeth Peyre Richardson Chapter of DAR in Manning, SC. Jessie was also a member of Dames of the Court of Honor, a membership given only to those who are descended from a Patriot officer in the Revolution.
Community service was also important to Jessie. She served on many boards and committees over the years including the Board of Directors of Williamsburg Academy (1975-78), Kingstree Planning and Zoning Board (1980 – 2009) serving as Chairman of that board 1987 – 2009 and 2017- present, the Williamsburg County Development Board Landscape Committee developing the new industrial park, and just this year, the Williamsburgh Historical Society Board as well as their 250 Committee planning Williamsburg County’s Sestercentennial. Beautification of our community was always paramount to Jessie. She showed that in her choices of serving others. Jessie was a member of three local garden clubs, Garden Makers Garden Club, Green Thumb Garden Club, and Home and Garden Club. She served at the state, regional and national level as well, becoming a Life Member of Garden Club of SC, a Life Member, South Atlantic Region of National Garden Clubs, Inc, and a Life Member of National Garden Clubs, Inc. During this time she served in many leadership roles, especially on the state level at Garden Clubs of SC: Landscape School Chairman and several other chairmanships, Coastal District Director, Third Vice President, Second Vice President, First Vice President, and President from 1993 to 1995. Jessie also served on the board of the National Council of State Garden Clubs. She was a longtime member of the Kingstree Beautification Committee and received the “Lady Bird Johnson Award” from the Williamsburg Hometown Chamber of Commerce. Jessie was appointed by the Governor to the SC Department of Natural Resources Advisory Committee of Conservation, Education and Communication and served there from 1995 to 2008.
In addition to all that she accomplished, Jessie Dale was an avid Atlanta Braves fan and SC Gamecock fan (especially football and basketball) and she watched or attended every game that she could.
Surviving Mrs. McCollough are: two daughters, Dale McCollough (John) Culbreth of Columbia and Julie McCollough (Ryan) Delaney of Spartanburg; two beloved granddaughters, Lillian Elizabeth Delaney and Virginia Anne Delaney. In addition to her parents and her husband of 28 years, Ted, who died in 1990, Jessie Dale was preceded in death by a beloved aunt who was more like a sister, Julia “Judy” Puckett Edwards.

Johnny Evans, widower of Ellen Swails Evans, passed away peacefully in his sleep during the early hours of the morning of September 18th, 2022, at Franke at Seaside in Mt. Pleasant. He was less than a month shy of his 95th birthday.
Johnny was born on October 16, 1927, in Kingstree, SC, the son of J. Workman Evans, Sr. and Trent Dye Evans. He and Ellen were childhood sweethearts and lived only two blocks from each other in the idyllic setting of their Kingstree neighborhood of the Depression and early war years. They were married in November 1947 and celebrated 66 years of marriage until Ellen’s death in December 2013.
Johnny was a classic overachiever. He was in the Clemson College Class of 1948, but finished early in the fall of 1947, because “that’s what you’re supposed to do.” Cadet Evans serenaded his fellow cadets with reveille and taps each day, became a cadet chaplain, and was invited to become a member of Blue Key, Tiger Brotherhood, and the national engineering honor society Tau Beta Pi.
He began his teaching career as an Instructor of Physics at The Citadel in January 1948, and soon transitioned into his first love, electrical engineering, where the cadets labeled him “Ready Kilowatt” because of his hyper-zealousness of the subject. The couple lived with the other young faculty at the Old Citadel on Marion Square where they formed lifetime friendships. Lt. Evans served in the US Army in Germany during the Korean War where he swore his presence there guaranteed that the Russians would not invade the West. Johnny found his way to the private sector at International Paper in Georgetown in 1955 and then on to Westvaco in 1959. That’s where he had his most fun and achieved the most professionally, yucking it up with the fellas and ladies in The Zoo and eventually retiring as Chief Electrical Engineer in 1993.
Johnny was most proud of being a lifelong Presbyterian, serving as a member of the Session in 3 different churches well into his 90s. When asked to serve that last time he said, “They need my wisdom.”
He is survived by his son, Jack (Evie), of Mt. Pleasant; son, Frank, of Columbia; his grandchildren, Drew (Kelly) and their children Owen and Rhys, Emily Limehouse (Thomas) and their children Louise and John Forrest; Forrest Evans (Anna) and their daughter Eliza, all of Mt. Pleasant; and Kell Evans of Columbia.
Finally, Johnny is survived by his goddaughter, Lucie Smunk (Bill) of Kingstree, who was the daughter he never had, and a special nephew, David Evans (Stephanie). It is because of these wonderful people and their families that Johnny’s 22 years back in Kingstree were so enjoyable.
In addition to Ellen, Johnny was predeceased by his parents, his brother Willard Dye Evans, and a great grandson, Thomas Ashley Limehouse, III.
The family wishes to express their sincere thanks and appreciation of Miss Bea Fleming of Kingstree who spoiled “Mr. Johnny” rotten since Ellen’s passing, the wonderful staff at Dr. Allen’s office in Kingstree where he felt like Norm on “Cheers” whenever he walked in; and to the exceptional people at Franke at Seaside that made his six month stay so fantastic.
The Service to the Witness of the Resurrection will be at 2pm, Saturday, September 24, 2022, at the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church in Kingstree. Visitation with be a 1:00 in Grace Hall right next to the sanctuary. Memorials can be made to Williamsburg Presbyterian Church Sanctuary Renovation Fund, 411 N. Academy Street, Kingstree, SC 29556.
