He was instrumental in starting the county fire department and worked his way from Firefighter/Mechanic to Fire Chief. He advocated for a Training Facility, modeling a rural specific firefighter training program. After retiring from the fire service, Ed became a custom cabinetmaker, designing and building kitchens and home interiors for many clients in the surrounding area. Ed Harville was my first best friend. From the time he was 4 and I was 3, we were inseparable throughout our childhood and adolescent years. We were both separated by service and employment in our 20s and I saw very little of my best friend after that. We finally got back together when he was fire chief and would come by and pick me up when he had to get some item from Slagle’s in South Boston, VA. I talked to him several and stayed connected via his YouTube video of his hikes. Sincere condolences to Jane and Ann, both know we were like brothers in our youth, he would stay at my house about every weekend, because he liked the country and he loved fishing with my mother and father. He had a private nickname I bet none of you know, ‘Kunna Zee”. I always referred to him by that name when we were together or talked on the phone. Go in Peace Kunna, I have been blessed like so many others to have spent my time with you.

  11. Jesse Griffin

We are saddened to hear about Ed’s passing. He was a great guy!
As a fellow former firefighter and past chief of the Lane Fire Department, I had many encounters with him in the early days of the Williamsburg Fire Department. He was always there to help with anything he could in our brotherhood and the community. This world was a better place with him in it and he will be missed.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Will always remember the special kindness of Mr. Ed
during and after the total loss
of our home. We went next door to Billy and Beth’s home and we
would see Mr Ed coming in with
items salvaged. He made numerous trips back and forth
    with such a willing heart.

Gloria and family, you have our
    heartfelt sympathy and love.

  16. Kenneth Starling

  17. Eileen T Maness

    Gloria,

So sorry to hear about Ed. Glad I got to know him when he renovated mama’s house for me in 2016-2017. He did a fabulous job and he had a great sense of humor during the process.

Sending prayers for you and Erin. Still remember our friendship with Pat C. back in elementary school and living down the street from each other in Summerville for awhile.

If you get a chance to come to the NC mountains, come see me.

  18. Dennis Lapp

My condolences to Ed’s family and friends and pray that the Lord will give them comfort and peace.
Ed and I met almost 20 years ago when we started backpacking along with other great people. We formed a quasi-family that stood by each other all this time. We had some very memorable experiences on the trail, and many of those memories evolve around Ed. He regaled us with stories of some of his past experiences that kept us laughing all night long. He was also the chief campfire builder. Those trips are special to us all, and they would not have been nearly as fun if Ed had not shared them with us. I doubt we will ever have another trip without remembering him. He will always be with us.
Lord Jesus, I know Ed is with you now. A true blessing for a good man.
We will all miss you, Ed.
