There are three types of people in this world. Some bring you down, and some make you stay as you are. Then there is a small group of people who make you a better person. Jim Haughton is one of those people.

A rarity but what all of us should strive to be. A zest for life, contagious positivity, confidence-inducing, and a perspective that only a fulfilling life can reveal; that is James Haughton.

To understand Jim Haughton is to know his story. A story where history looks back on how one should truly embrace life. Jim Haughton’s legacy is derived from becoming who he is, a story that most people won’t hold a candle to, nor try.

Jim Haughton was a graduate of Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina. Presbyterian College has a strict honor code that is required to abide by in a traditional ceremony every year. The first part of the honor code is to “abstain from all deceit.” Jim Haughton was a straight shooter and a genuine man in every way possible. Jim’s internal code of conduct is absolute and inspiring.

Jim Haughton’s life in the US Navy helped forge the man we know. Since 1775, the core values of the US Navy have been Honor, Courage, and Commitment. These foundational disciplines are what we see in heroes throughout history, in and out of wartime. It’s not hard to see how Jim Haughton bravely and without regard to his own safety, jumped into action and subdued a violent person while in New York City. History proves that great effort springs naturally from a great attitude.

Kingstree, South Carolina has its name because of a large white pine on the Black River that was claimed by the Crown on behalf of the King before America demanded our independence. Since the 1780s, Kingstree has been about claiming this tree as American. Nothing else is more fitting than Jim Haughton’s final resting place there. Fallen the king, Kingstree is now Jim’s Tree.

As Tennyson said, “I am part of all that I have met.” Jim Haughton is a great part of all we have met.

Mr. Haughton, your influence inspires many and for many generations. A hero, leader, mentor, and influencer; rest in peace dear friend.

  8. Lou Rogers Christian and Flinn Rogers Anderson

Our thoughts and prayers are with Jimmy’s family and friends. He was a wonderful friend to our parents. After Daddy passed away and Mamma moved to Columbia Mr. Jimmy called to check on her (seemed like every month) until her passing almost eight years later. Sweet man, always a smile for all. May you rest in peace.

Jim and I met years ago through volunteer work. He was a friend I will always remember. He was so friendly in conversation that I felt
I had known him for many years.

  10. Wilson Powell

I met Jim twenty some years ago at his home in Kingstree where he taught me how to make a real Bloody Mary. We became very good friends He was always included in our activities. Either on the waterway or Hwy 1 on the coast of California he was with us. We had great adventures with stories j could tell and some maybe not. Having Jim in my life was special. I will always love him and the memories he made.
