Momma is gone, she has slipped the surly bonds of earth, shrugged off the mortal coil.
No more blah blah blah taxes, blah blah blah plumbing issues.
Momma was one part Love, Laughter, and Kindness, and one part “Let me show you where you can stick it.” She suffered a stroke about a week ago, due largely to the cigarettes she loved to smoke. You raise an eyebrow to a 74 year-old woman smoking? She would have been happy to show you where you could stick that. Diet? Exercise? She would have shown you where to stick those, too. Get the picture?
Momma was an artist to the core. She loved to create anything pretty, in any form or fashion. She used to tell her husband, “Don’t worry about it, I’m in charge of pretty.” If you are reading this, there is a good chance you or someone you know has something she painted. She loved flowers and spent countless hours growing them. She could work all day making a beautiful mosaic in the bathroom floor of a trailer, spend hours painting an intricate design on a styrofoam cooler, but would not spend five minutes on a W2 unless there was a gun pointed at her head. She couldn’t care less about money, and had no interest in chasing it. Her love for her family was endless and fierce, her temper ran white hot, and she carried a Saturday Night Special (Illegal! Around children?!) in her pocket book. Aghast? See the paragraph above.
She is going to join her Mom and Dad. If there is one thing that brings a smile to our face, it is the image of Momma seeing Atwood & Judy and sitting down at the kitchen table to have a cup of Granma’s instant coffee.
She is survived by her big brothers, Randy (Jenny) and Elwynn (JoAnne) and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Momma leaves behind five grandchildren, Angelina, Susanna, Cady Mae, Case, and Christina. They were the love of her life. Her world revolved around them, whether it was going to their dance recitals, teaching them to paint, or making them cinnamon toast.
She leaves behind seven children – Shane & Holly, Woody & Michelle, Jacqueline & Jimmy, and Kyle. Yes, seven. The wives and husband are listed. They treated her as well as any mother could be treated, and her brood is no longer complete without them. Jacqueline and Woody fought and clawed for the title of favorite, but everyone knew that title went to Shane or Kyle, who seemed totally indifferent to it. There is a lot there for Woody and Jacq to unpack, so give them time.
If the criteria for successful mother is number of offspring, Momma is far down on the list, although four is respectable. If it is successful children, sorry, not a doctor or lawyer in the lot. But if the measure of a successful mother is how much her children love her, then Momma takes the prize. They simply adored her.
Finally, she leaves behind Pete, her husband of 56 years. You probably call him Jack. Partners in crime, enablers, disablers, travel buddies, enemies, champions, best friends, and perfect companions. Ying and Yang. We hope everyone who reads this finds their perfect companion and is able to build the life these two had.

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing this Beautiful Lady all.of my life. Her family was like my family and The THEIR DOORS WERE always open!

I knew Mrs Kay for 30+ years and just now learned she was named Linda. This only adds to the legend that she was to me. I always viewed her as a Renaissance woman: painter, master landscaper, chef, Queen of the Guineafowl, terror doll monger.
It’s been a few years since I’ve seen Mrs Kay but I still think of her every time I have some cube steak with gravy. I tried it in her kitchen for the first time and she was bragging about how it was a deer Shane had killed. She was always bragging on her kids. Or later about what Angelina had drawn. She could seemlessly segue from these brags into a rant about how stupid the person on TV or the kid in our class was. Always followed by a hearty laugh, of course.
She was a joy to be around and always endlessly sweet to me.
What I wouldn’t give for one more trip to Clemmons Video with her.

Sad news, but an absolutely wonderful obituary. It was always my pleasure to run into Kay and share a laugh. My condolences to her family.
My condolences to Jack and the entire family 🙏 I grew up a mile down the road from the Scotts and remember her smile and how she treated people with compassion and always straightforward!

If you can love an obituary ~ we love Kay’s! We have one of those intricate paintings on a washboard ~ and one of a tenant house. One of our favorites is of a cotton mill where I grew up. Jacqueline, thank you for getting me in touch with your mom not too long ago. We had fun reminiscing. She was an amazing lady.
Aunt Kay, you were always such a lively & wonderful presence in my life. You always encouraged me to be me and loved me. Your art was and will always be beautiful. Your art encouraged me to want to do more with art too early on when I first got into art myself. You always had a smile and a contagious laughter to share and you were simply so unapologetically yourself. We’ll miss you so much. Holidays won’t be the same without you there, I always looked forward to seeing you. Love you always.
Sincere condolences to the Dorrell family. So many fond memories growing up and spending so very many Sundays with Kay, her brothers and Aunt Judy and Uncle Atwood. Sorry we were unable to spend more time together in our later years. Heaven is much more colorful now !!
There was only ONE Kay! She was a delight to know, as is each one of her children and I am certain each one of her grandchildren. I never saw her or Jack without a smile on their faces. Loved teaching everyone of her bright, creative children, and now I completely understand why they are bright, creative and entertaining. All love and deep sympathy.
Randy and Elwyn want you to know that Carolyn and I are thinking of you and will be praying for you and your family as well..
