Mattie Powell “Matt” Burgess, 79, wife of Jeff Burgess, passed away peacefully Friday, August 14, 2026, at McLeod Hospice in Florence, surrounded by family.
Matt was born June 6, 1947, in Ridgeland, SC, a daughter of the late Curtis Malcolm Powell and Ollie Lee Sheppard Powell. She was a graduate of Jenkins High School in Savannah, GA. Matt worked at Burgess Insurance Agency for 50 years, many of those years as CEO. She was involved in many organizations around her community and left a lasting impact on each one.
She was a member of Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, the Professional Women’s Organization of Kingstree, the Women’s Golf Association of the Pee Dee, and was a proud member of the Kingstree Chamber of Commerce and served as its president in 1987. Matt also played in numerous bridge clubs around Kingstree over the years.
She had a group of special friends for over 70 years known as “The Sisters”, consisting of Mary Brown, Carolyn Grayson and June Holliday.
Matt will be remembered for her warm heart, quick wit, devotion to her family and friends, and lasting friendships she made throughout her life. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her.
In addition to her husband Jeff, Matt is survived by: two sons, Brian Burgess (Jennifer), of Kingstree, and Joel Burgess (Elizabeth Charla Turner), of Murrells Inlet; a granddaughter who was her pride and joy, Jenna Kate Burgess; a brother, Mike Powell (Carolyn); nieces and nephews, Tim Powell (Holly), Amy Sanders (Jonathan), and Megan Freeman (William).
