Thomas “Tommy” Altman, born August 5, 1943, in Suttons, South Carolina, was a hardworking, strong, and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Throughout his life, he was known for his toughness, dedication, faith, and commitment to his family and to serving others.
Tommy shared 59 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Geneva Ward Altman. Together, they built a life centered on family, hard work, and lasting memories. He was a devoted husband and father who took pride in his family and cherished the time they spent together.
Some of Tommy’s happiest memories were made outdoors. He loved camping with the camping club and especially treasured the many summers spent camping at Somerset with his grandchildren. These summers created memories that his family will hold close for years to come. He also loved spending time at the farm, riding his tractor and enjoying the simple pleasures of a life well lived.
Tommy had a special passion for service and helping others. Each summer, he looked forward to taking the youth from his church to participate in the Salkahatchie Summer Service, where they worked to help those in need.
Throughout his working life, Tommy held several jobs that reflected his strong work ethic and practical skills. His employment included driving trucks for J.Carlisle Shirer Trucking, Georgia-Pacific Chemical Division, and Santee Cooper’s Gopher Program. He also worked as a mechanic at Albany International.
Tommy was a member of Suttons Methodist Church and the Suttons Men’s Club, where he maintained connections with his community and fellow members.
Above all, Tommy’s greatest legacy is the family he loved and the memories he leaves behind. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Geneva Ward Altman; his children, Jamie Eston Altman (Shand) and Leslie Altman Whetzel (Jeff); his grandchildren, Savannah Whetzel Johnson (Konner), Ashton Jameson Altman, and Miller Altman Whetzel; and his great-granddaughter, Ella Mae Marie Johnson. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Isla Rebecca Gross (Norm); his nephew, Robby Carpenter Jr., whom he loved as his own; a great aunt Minnie Campbell and many other family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
The family extends a heartfelt thank-you to Amedisys Hospice for the compassionate care they provided to Tommy. Special appreciation is given to his caregiver, Ms. Shayolanda McClary, whose kindness, warmth, and loving presence were such a bright light during his final days. The family is also deeply grateful to his very special friends, Pete and Vaiter Litchfield, who faithfully visited him and brought comfort through their friendship.
Tommy’s legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the lives he touched, and the countless memories that will forever be treasured by those who loved him.
