Darlene McCutchen Miles, 62, wife of Dewayne J. “Joe” Miles, died Thursday, February 21, 2019, in Williamsburg Regional Hospital.

         Mrs. Miles was born November 28, 1956, in Kingstree, SC, a daughter of the late Willard and Mildred McClary McCutchen. She was a graduate of Kingstree High School and worked at Animal Hospital of Kingstree for 36 years. She enjoyed horseback riding and spending time with her grandchildren and her sisters.

     Surviving Mrs. Miles, in addition to her husband Joe, are: her daughter, Lisa (Chad) Miles, of Kingstree; step children, Keldon “Bubba” (Ruth Ann) Miles, of Lake City, Kristy Butler and Jody Butler, both of Granite Falls, NC; grandchildren, Tony Dennis, Emily Dennis, Grace Dennis, Hannah Miles, and Abigail Miles; sisters, Justine Matthews, of Kingstree, Clarice (Blakely) Mercer, of Moncks Corner, and Cynthia (Bobby) Robinson and Charlene McKenzie, both of Kingstree; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Darlene was preceded in death by a sister, Carol M. Gandy.

     Funeral services will be 2:30 PM Sunday, February 24, 2019, in the chapel at Williamsburg Funeral Home, with burial in Sandy Bay Cemetery.  Her family will receive friends Saturday evening at the funeral home from 6 to 8. Dorothy Hancock Haynes, of 7752 Cranley Road, Powell, died at home on February 15, 2019.  Mrs. Haynes was born on September 14, 1927 near New Zion, Clarendon County, SC, daughter of Marion and Minnie Evans.  She lived most of her life in Kingstree, SC where she, along with her late husband, Junius “Buster” Hancock, owned and operated Hancock’s Restaurant for 35 years.  She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Kingstree, SC.  Along with operating the restaurant, Dorothy was a self-taught seamstress and created window treatments for many families in Kingstree.  She loved entertaining and cooking for family and friends, working in her yard, quilting with her quilting group, and reading.

Dot and Buster were married for almost 50 years before he died.  She married Virgil Haynes in 1997 and moved to Oak Ridge, TN.  They had almost 20 years together.

Survivors include a daughter Vicki of Powell, TN; a granddaughter, Angela and husband Bryan Acuff and their children Rogan and Jurnee all of Powell; grandson, R.O., III and Wendy Ward and their children, Brittany and husband Lonny Vereen and her children, Hunter and Heath Stalvey; Whitni Ward; Meca Ward IV and son Elliott of Conway, SC.  Carol Martin and husband Keith and their children, Cody, Kassidy and Caleb of Kingstree, SC; and Rachel McGee and her children, John David, Chloe and Jack of Latta, SC; stepdaughter Linda Byrd and step granddaughter, Cassidy Nelson and her husband Jody and their daughter Ayla of Birmingham, AL; and a stepson, Gary Haynes and wife Laurel and Laurel’s daughters, Alyssa and Colleen Moore. Surviving brothers and sisters in SC are Desoline Thigpen, Richard Evans, Patsy Wilson, Joyce Rogers, and Russell Evans, and Diane Carper of Butler, IN.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband Junius “Buster” Hancock; her second husband Virgil Haynes; her brother L.C. Evans, sister Rounette Reardon and daughter Peggy Rosser.

The family will receive friends from 2pm to 3pm on Wed. February 20, at Williamsburg Funeral Home in Kingstree, SC.  The service will follow at 3pm.   Burial is at Kingstree Memorial Gardens immediately following the service.

     Veanna “Pee Wee” Cox, 91, widow of Donald L. Cox, died Friday, February 15, 2019, in Carolinas Hospital- Florence.

     Mrs. Cox was born September 3, 1927, in Longs, SC, a daughter of the late Alphonso F. Parker and Lutie Dorman Parker.  After attending Coker College, she and her husband made Kingstree their home in 1947. She worked at Preacher’s Drug Store and Williamsburg County Health Department for numerous years but discovered that ladies’ retail was her true passion.  She worked at Silverman’s, Stella’s and the House of Joye.  Mrs. Cox was a former member of the Kingstree Pilot Club, Kingstree Garden Club and several bridge clubs. She was a member of Kingstree First Baptist Church and had attended Kingstree United Methodist Church in recent years. 

     Surviving Mrs. Cox are her daughter, Donna Sue Cox, of Kingstree and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Pee Wee was preceded in death by her husband, Don Cox, former Sheriff of Williamsburg County, brothers, Alton Parker and A.D. Parker and sister Lucile Parker Moore.

Buford Charles Gause, 73, husband of Nancy Miles Gause, died Friday, February 15, 2019, in Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.

     Mr. Gause was born June 3, 1945, in Kingstree, a son of the late Hobson and Leola McKenzie Gause. He attended Kingstree High School and was retired from Georgia-Pacific. Buford was an avid fisherman and was a dedicated member of Kingstree Pentecostal Holiness Church.

     Surviving Mr. Gause, in addition to his wife Nancy, of Kingstree, are: 2 daughters, Sharon (Darl) Neiswonger, of Blythewood, SC and Robin (Kurt) Rice, of Richmond Hill, GA; 5 grandchildren, Jakob, Jordan, and Kayla Neiswonger and Dylan and Dustin Rice; and 3 sisters, Roberta (Rocky) Gannon, Myrtle (Bobby) Smith, and Vivian Cooper. In addition to his parents, Buford was preceded in death by 4 brothers, Raleigh Gause, Clarence Gause, Marion Gause, and Norman Gause.

Kenneth Gregory Wooten, Jr., 74, husband of Victoria Floyd Wooten, passed away peacefully Sunday, February 10, 2019, in McLeod Hospice House in Florence, SC.

           Surviving Mr. Wooten in addition to his wife Victoria, are sons, Kenneth Gregory Wooten, III and Jonathan Davis Wooten, and a nephew who was like a son, Kirk London Bowling.

     Mrs. Mattie Stone Gause, 83, widow of Thomas Raleigh Gause, passed away Wednesday, February 6, 2019, in McLeod Regional Medical Center.

    Mrs. Mattie was born November 9, 1935, in Florence County, a daughter of the late Ansel and Dora Flowers Stone. She attended Hanna Community Schools and was a former manager of Warrens Fabric Shop in Kingstree. Mrs. Mattie was a member of Kingstree First Pentecostal Holiness Church. She enjoyed cooking and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

     Surviving Mrs. Mattie, are her two sons, T. Roger (Ginger) Gause and G. Russell Gause, both of Kingstree; two brothers, Harold Stone, of Lake City; and Terry (Nora) Stone, of Florence; one sister, Letha McDaniel, of Lake City; her grandchildren, Kevin R. (Maggie) Gause, of Florence; Patrick R. (Crystal) Gause, of Florence; W. Hugh (Caitlyn) Gause, of Kingstree; and Thomas R. Gause, of Lake City; great grandchildren, Nathan R. Gause, Sarah B. Gause, Ella Nova Gause, Raleigh C. Gause, and Ellie B. Gause.

    In addition to her parents, Mrs. Mattie was preceded in death by a brother, Ansel Cleo Stone.

Mrs. Elizabeth Edwards Stanley, 90, widow of Richard L. Stanley, died Sunday, January 27, 2019 at McLeod Regional Medical Center.

    Mrs. Stanley was born June 23, 1928, in Conway, SC, a daughter of the late William Graddy Edwards and Marie Ryan Edwards. She was a graduate from Conway High School. Mrs. Stanley was the former owner and bookkeeper of Kingstree Red and White. She was President of Kingstree Pilot Club and a member of Kingstree First Baptist Church, Rainbow Sunday School Class, GA’s Leader and taught Bible School. Mrs. Stanley loved to fish and enjoyed being with her grandchildren.

     Surviving Mrs. Stanley, are her daughter, Linda (Hilton) McGill, of Kingstree; grandchildren, Frank McGill, of Greenville, Meg M. (Greg) Beatson, of Kingstree, and Stan (Logan) McGill, of Florence, 6 great grandchildren, Emma Ryan Gordon, Hilton McGill, Gracie McGill, May McGill, Carter McGill, and Davis McGill; siblings, Jim (Maxine) Edwards, of Pinopolis; Louise Edwards, Ann (C.W.) Smith, and Lewis (Jeannie) Edwards; sister-in-law, Esther Edwards, all of Conway.

In addition to her husband, R.L. Stanley, Mrs. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her brothers, Eugene Edwards, and Billy Edwards; a sister, Rebecca Chestnut, and an infant daughter.

Mrs. Denise Dow Burroughs, 45, wife of James Scottie Burroughs, died Sunday, January 27, 2019 at her residence.

    Mrs. Burroughs was born December 3, 1973, in Caribou, Maine, a daughter of Norman Jeffrey Dow and the late Jennifer McPherson McCrea. She was a cashier at Casselshack Seafood Resturant. Mrs. Burroughs was a member of Union Presbyterian Church.

     Surviving Mrs. Burroughs, in addition to her father Norman Jeffery Dow and her husband Scottie Burroughs, are her daughters, Emalee Tisdale and Carrie Tisdale; grandchildren, Joshua Wrenn Filyaw, Marshall Filyaw, Braylee Filyaw, and Madison Ward; sisters, Julie Wolff, Phoebe Desjarden, and Laura Oswalt; stepchildren, Trish Burroughs and Scott Burroughs; step grandchildren, Haylee Soloman, Logan Soloman, and Mallory Burroughs; and many aunts, uncles and cousins in Florida and Maine.

    Mrs. Burroughs was preceded in death by her grandmothers, Josephine Dow and Winnifred McPherson; and her grandfathers, Norman Dow and Eldon McPherson.

     Colin Ryan Roark, 42, died Friday, January 25, 2019, in McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.

     Mr. Roark was born May 8, 1976, in Sumter, SC, a son of Lyndal Wayne Roark and Sharon Coker Dukes. He was a graduate of Williamsburg Academy and attended Midlands Tech. He was employed by Roark Communications and was a member of Williamsburg Presbyterian Church. Ryan enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his daughter.

     Surviving Mr. Roark are: his daughter, Rylie Ann Roark; his wife, Jill Thomas Roark; and his stepdaughters, Taylor and Brenna Welch, all of Kingstree; his father, Wayne Roark, of Manning; his stepmother, Cheryl Oliver, of Greeleyville; his mother, Sharon Coker Dukes, of Dallas, TX; his brother, Kevin (Jennifer) Roark, of Sumter; his sisters, Maggie R. (Kevin) Mims, of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Stacey O. (Robbie) Mooneyham, of Alcolu, SC; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

LeJune Patrick “Pat” Floyd, Jr., 69, husband of Julie Ann Kirven Floyd, died Wednesday, January 16, 2019, in Williamsburg Regional Hospital.

Mr. Floyd was born November 24, 1949, in Kingstree, a son of the late LeJune P. Floyd, Sr. and Eula Mae Crosby Floyd. He was a graduate of Kingstree High School and Midlands Technical College in Columbia. “Pat” was a self-employed contractor. He was a lifelong member of Sandy Bay Pentecostal Holiness Church, the Men’s Fellowship and a former deacon. Pat was quiet, generous, and patient giving his time, energy, and resources to all he knew. He was an accomplished taxidermist and talented builder of many things. Most of all, Pat enjoyed spending time outdoors with his grandchildren.

Surviving Mr. Floyd, in addition to his wife Julie, of the home, are: his children, Patricia F. (Steve) Wilbourne, of Mt. Pleasant; and Christopher P. (Jessie) Floyd, of John’s Island; 6 grandchildren, Annie Kirven Wilbourne, Lila Grace Wilbourne, Layne Patrick Floyd, Mary Mackenzie Wilbourne, Julia Rose Floyd, and Kenley Jane Floyd; sisters, Victoria (Ken) Wooten, of Florence, and Linda Price, of Cades; and a brother Johnny (Janet) Floyd, of Lexington.

Mrs. Wilhelmina Grist, 98, died Thursday, November 15, 2018, at the home of her grandson Sean Grayson (Heather) in Sumter, SC where she resided for the last seven months.

Mrs. Grist was born in Salters, a daughter of the late Frank Lee and Frankie Earl Cook Richardson. She was a graduate of Kingstree High School and the University of South Carolina in 1942 with a Bachelor of Arts. She retired from the Life of Georgia after 30 plus years of service. Mrs. Grist was a member of Union Presbyterian Church. She loved animals, horseback riding and gardening where she spent much of her abled time tending to her plants.

Mrs. Grist was preceded in death by her brother, James Monroe Richardson, sisters, Jane Richardson Lifrage and Buford Richardson, daughter and son-in-law, Joan Hartness Grist McConnell and Roger Earl McConnell, and also granddaughter, Shari Payne Kaple. Surviving her are: her sister, Elizabeth Richardson Wilburn of Kingstree; daughter, Michal Grist Grayson of Sevierville, Tennessee, three grandchildren Timothy Craig Payne, Jr. (Amy) of Summerville, Letitia Chovine Grayson of Pawley’s Island, Sean Allen Grayson (Heather) of Sumter; three great grandchildren, Shyantra Capers of Kingstree, Miya Payne and Ayden Payne of Summerville.

Mrs. Joan Hartness Grist McConnell, 71, widow of Roger Earl McConnell, died Saturday, April 14, 2018, at home in Summerville, SC, after a long battle with breast cancer.

Mrs. McConnell was born February 27, 1947 in York, SC, a daughter of Wilhelmina Richardson Grist of Summerville and the late James Davidson Grist, Jr.  Joan was a 1965 graduate of Kingstree High School.  She received her BSN degree from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) College of Nursing in 1969.  In addition, Mrs. McConnell received her Physician’s Assistant-Medex from MUSC in 1974.  Mrs. McConnell’s Master of Arts degree was conferred upon her by South Carolina State University in 1996.

An animal lover, Joan always had multiple dogs and cats in her many homes, and horses outside in a stable.  She and her husband, Roger, as well as her daughter, Shari, spent countless hours on horseback together.

In addition to her husband and father, Mrs. McConnell was preceded in death by her much loved daughter, Shari Payne Kaple, of Summerville.

Survivors are:  her son, Timothy Craig Payne, Jr. (Amy), of Summerville; 3 grandchildren, Shyantra Capers of Kingstree, Miya Payne and Ayden Payne of Summerville and a sister, Michal Grist Grayson, of Sevierville, Tennessee.  She also leaves behind the father of her children, Timothy Craig Payne of Summerville and a special caregiver, Grace Biddiscombe of Ladson.

Memorial services will be held at 2PM Saturday, January 26, 2019 in Union Presbyterian Church, Salters, SC, with a burial in the church cemetery.

Eunice Temple Ford Gamble, 89, widow of Julius Pendergrass “J.P.” Gamble, Sr., died Wednesday, January 2, 2019, at Lakes of Litchfield in Pawley’s Island.

Mrs. Eunice was born March 27, 1929, in Charlotte, NC, a daughter of the late Rufus Ford and Mildred Jeffers Ford. She was a graduate of Ashley Hall, alumni of Limestone College and graduated with a BA in Education from The University of South Carolina, where she was a member of Alpha Delta PI Sorority. Mrs. Eunice taught in Williamsburg and Berkeley County Schools and retired after 30+ years. She was the past President of Green Thumb Garden Club of Kingstree and a member of Garden Club of South Carolina and National Garden Clubs, a member of The Landscape Design Consultants Council of SC, Daughters of American Revolution and Colonial Dames of the XVII Century. Mrs. Eunice was also a member of Greeleyville United Methodist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Gamble are: her children, Julius P. “Jay” Gamble, Jr., of Sunapee, NH, Catherine Gamble, of Pawley’s Island, and Larry (Edith) Gamble, of Milwaukee, WI; daughter-in-law, Cindy Gamble, of Greensboro, NC; 8 grandchildren; and sisters, Ann F. Dutton, of Richmond, VA; and Chris F. Gaines, of Greensboro, NC.

In addition to her parents and her husband “J.P.” Mrs. Eunice was preceded in death by a son, David Ford Gamble, of Greensboro, NC; daughter-in-law, Jane Gamble, of Sunapee, NH; a brother, Thomas J. Ford; and a sister, Harriett F. Maxwell.

Funeral services will be 2 PM Saturday, January 5, 2019, in Greeleyville United Methodist Church, with a burial in New Market Cemetery. Honorary Pallbearers will be Wayne Gamble, John R. Gamble, Alton McCollough, Philip Murray, John Ridgel Gamble, Jr, and Hale McCollough.

William Martin “Bill” McCrea, 66, passed away on Friday, December 28, 2018.

Mr. McCrea was born November 13, 1952, in Kingstree, a son of Betty Boyd McCrea and the late Thomas Martin McCrea. He was a graduate of Kingstree High School and was a farmer. Bill was an avid fisherman.

Surviving Bill, in addition to his mother of Kingstree, are: his brothers, Emmett McCrea and Hugh (Linda) McCrea, both of Kingstree.

Alma Martha Nexsen, 82, died Friday, December 28, 2018, at Elmcroft Assisted Living in Florence.

Miss Alma was born September 11, 1936, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Leland Ivy Nexsen and Eleida Parrott Nexsen. She was a graduate of Kingstree High School and retired from Southern Bell Telephone Company after 37 years.

Surviving Miss Alma are: her brothers, William “Billy” (Wanda) Nexsen, of Cades; and Paul D. Nexsen, of Scranton; and a sister, Mary Sue (Mike) Hewett, of Socastee. In addition to her parents, Miss Alma was preceded in death by her siblings, Lucille Nexsen Disher, Margaret Louise Disher, James Leon Nexsen, Leland Rubin Nexsen, Samuel “Sam” Melvin Nexsen, Eleida “Doll” Nexsen Burrows, Vardell John Nexsen, Betty Lou Nexsen Culick, and Junior Leland Nexsen.

Carolyn Elizabeth Ives Brown, 66, wife of James C. Brown, died Monday, December 4, 2018, at her home.

Mrs. Brown was born April 18, 1952, in Greeleyville, SC, a daughter of the late Muret and Melva Ard Ives. She was a graduate of Williamsburg High School and was a home maker. Carolyn enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles, coloring and looking at pictures.

Surviving Mrs. Brown, in addition to her husband James, of the home, are: her first husband, Allen Bryant; her daughter, Vicky Bryant, of Manning; her son, Allen Bryant, Jr., of Myrtle Beach; 3 grandchildren, Kevin (Janie Espinoza) Robinson, Brittany (Ian) Vincent, and Jesse Robinson; 2 great grandchildren, Stormy and Jacob Robinson; and 2 brothers, Leroy (Betty) Ives and William Ives. In addition to her parents, Carolyn was preceded in death by a sister, Marie Ives. Ralph Cleo Fennell, Jr., 70, died Thursday, November 22, 2018, at his home after an illness.

Mr. Fennell was born February 24, 1948, in Kingstree, a son of the late Ralph Cleo Fennell, Sr. and Barbara Huggins Fennell. He was a graduate of Kingstree High School and received a Bachelor degree from Clemson University and a Master of Arts degree in education from the University of SC. Ralph was retired after serving as principal of Greeleyville Elementary School and Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent of Williamsburg County Schools.

Ralph is survived by his son, Brad (Temple) Fennell, of Pooler, GA, a grandson, Conner Fennell and granddaughter, Bellamy Fennell, also of Pooler, 2 sisters, Saundra F. (Bill) Dyson, of Georgetown, SC and Pam F. (Yancey) McGill, of Kingstree, and many nieces and nephews.

A family service will be held at a later date.

Linnie Mae Powell Gause, 82, wife of Ossie P. Gause, died Saturday, November 24, 2018, in Kingstree Nursing Facility.

Mrs. Gause was born March 2, 1936, in Florence, a daughter of the late Ted Powell and Luetta Owens Powell. She was a homemaker and a member of Kingstree Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Surviving Mrs. Gause, in addition to her husband Ossie are: a son, Purdis L. Gause, of Kingstree, a brother, Therrell Williamson, of Columbia, three half sisters, and three half brothers.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gause was preceded in death by a brother, Larry Powell.

Funeral services celebrating Mrs. Gause’s life will be 2 PM Tuesday, November 27, 2018, at Williamsburg Funeral Home, with burial in Kingstree Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery. Dr. Idalyn Stoll Brown, beloved wife of Carol E. Brown, died suddenly Saturday, November 24, 2018, in Lake City, SC. Idalyn was the daughter of the late Philip Cunningham and Charles McLeod Stoll. Idalyn was a member of Kingstree Presbyterian Church.

Born in Columbia, SC on April 9, 1935, Idalyn soon moved to Kingstree, her father’s native home, and spent her childhood and youth in their home on Academy Street. She was educated in the Kingstree schools and was recognized during her youth for her musical talent.

Idalyn married her high school sweetheart, Carol, on June 1, 1956. During their 62 years of marriage, they shared many adventures and moves due to Carol’s Air Force assignments and career opportunities.

Idalyn earned a PHD in Experimental Psychology from The University of Georgia in Athens, GA, but prior to this, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Coker College, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Salem College, and a Master of Science degree in Psychology from Francis Marion University. Dr. Brown spent the following years evaluating children with brain injuries, lecturing at universities and medical conferences, and publishing articles on brain injury. She worked at The University of Georgia in Athens, GA, Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, NC and Valley Children’s Hospital in Fresno, CA, and she completed her career in private practice in Mt. Pleasant, SC. Dr. Brown was also a member of MENSA.

Surviving Dr. Brown, in addition to her husband Carol, are her children and grandchildren: Mike (Louise) Brown, of Lake City, and Susan Stoll Brown-Tate, MD, of Louisville, KY; 6 grandchildren, Mike (Jolie) Brown, of Kingstree, Will (Jessie) Brown, of Kingstree, Elizabeth Brown, of Charleston, David Tate, Elizabeth Tate, and Katherine Tate, all of Louisville, KY; 3 great grandchildren, Devanie Brown, Andrew Brown, and Caroline Brown; 2 siblings, Phil Stoll, of Whiteville, NC and Charlene Stoll Hale, of Lexington, SC as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services celebrating Dr. Brown’s life will be 11 AM Tuesday, November 27, 2018, in Kingstree Presbyterian Church, with burial in Tisdale Cemetery. Dr. Brown’s family will receive friends in the fellowship hall at Kingstree Presbyterian Church from 10 to 10:45 AM before the service. Edward Leon “Junie” Graham, Jr., 88, husband of Jane Jaudon Blakely Graham, died Thursday, November 22, 2018, at his residence surrounded by his family.

Mr. Graham was born April 5, 1930, in Greeleyville, a son of the late Edward Leon Graham and Willie Louise Gist Graham. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Clemson University. Junie worked for The DuPont Textile Manufacturing Company where he was a plant manager in Brazil. He was a Korean War Air Force veteran and was a member of Kingstree United Methodist Church.

Surviving Mr. Graham in addition to his wife Jane are: his children, Patricia Jane Adams, Edward Michael Graham, both of Murrells Inlet, SC, Kevin J. Graham and his wife, Gale Whiting, of Tega Cay, SC, and Austin Blakely Graham, of Goose Creek, SC; a very special sister-in-law, Beezie Jarrett, of Kingstree; a sister, Gertha Lou Stackley, of Kingstree; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Graham was preceded in death by a sister, Audrey Newsome and her son George Newsome.

A memorial service celebrating Mr. Junie’s life will be 2:30 PM Wednesday, November 28, 2018, in Kingstree United Methodist Church. Mr. Graham’s family will receive friends at 1PM before the service in the Ladies Parlor of the church.
